Importing into Photo, but want to use my folders

I gave up on mac since they are not updating my beloved mac mini. Got a Dell with windows 10. I have downloaded all the programs and most of the files. Even downloaded iTunes and my music with the library titles. My pictures though are a problem. No iPhoto for pc so I downloaded all my photos. Could not do it by album. Then I uploaded on the pc and separated them into files pertaining to who the pictures are about. Then I put into photo that came with windows. Pictures are there, but not organized by file name. Tried creating an album and dragging and dropping from the file list - nope. There has got to be some easy fix or any fix. If you know, please help. Thanks

    :)

  2. How to organize your photos using the Photos app?

I am trying to organize my photo's using the Windows 10 photos app. All of my new photos are getting imported correctly to folders under my Pictures folder, sorted by 'yyyy-mm'. Unfortunately, I have a few other folders that are already on my computer
and I can't figure out how to tell the Photo's program to 'import' them into this consistent format. Instead, the only option I see available is to add those alternate folders into the program as 'source folders', which fails to put them into the yyyy-mm
    folders the way I want.

Do I really need to put these pictures on an external drive just to use the import feature to import them into Photos using the 'yyyy-mm' format?

Importing Photos on new Windows 10

    Hi

I would like to know how to change the settings for photo import in the new Windows 10 Photos App.

I have looked at the FAQ in the previous answer and it mentions that there are options such as specifying which folder you import to, and format for the folders (eg a separate folder for each day that pictures were taken.) I import by directly connecting
my camera (Panasonic G1) to the USB port and I have autoplay settings to import to Photos.

In my previous Windows (7) it had these settings and I want to preserve the structure of how my photos are stored on the HDD with the same folder arrangement etc. At the moment they all just imported into Photos folder and are mixed in with photos from other
sources. I want to keep the ones from the "proper camera" separate.

    Thanks

Importing into Photo, but want to use my folders

Hello austin571 and welcome to TenForums,

As far as I know the photos are all arranged in the W10 Photo app according to the date the picture was taken. This information is found from the metadata stored with the image.

The pictures themselves are all in the original folders on your PC; the Photo App is just a display app and does not interfere with the original file locations. One of the features of the latest version of the Photo App is the People view. This sounds like it might be useful for you as it uses facial recognition to display all the photos associated with the same face.

Thanks, that would work if I am just doing folders by people, but it is a bit more detailed. Then I have folders with different dogs. There has so be something matching iPhoto on the windows side.

I used to have a MacBook Pro until something took out the drive controller. Never did care for iPhoto but on Mac and Windows found GIMP to be usable or on Windows look at Irfanview. MajorGeeks.Com - MajorGeeks

You could run Bonaview and use the folder tree to select folders containing images. You can create albums and move multiple images at a time into any album.

    The downsides:
    Bonaview is not updated anymore.
It has to be installed in compatiblity mode.
It will not sort your images into albums in windows file explorer.

BonAView Free Photo Manager | High Motion Software

On the other hand Wildbit Image viewer portable would allow you to preview thumbnails of images in any folder and drag and drop them at will into any other folder in the tree. This means that you can create folders in file explorer and use wildbit for drag and drop.

    You'd need the portable version.

Importing into Photo, but want to use my folders

    Hi there
As you used to have a Mac I'd suggest creating a Linux Virtual Machine, install Digicam and you've got everything you need (100% Free) and will also handle RAW files for top end DSLR's too.

Sorry about the Linux recommendation here but this really is a very good app and as you were a Mac user this shouldn't be too hard.

    Cheers

Tried Iranview. That did not make my computer happy. It kept dinging with all sorts of warnings. Trying the Digicam now even though jimbo threw me for a loop with Linux.

    Hi there
    Glad you liked it

On a VM Linux isn't too horrible either --just ensure SAMBA is up and running and no problem sharing with Windows (both ways).

    Cheers

Just curious but why do you suggest to create a virtual machine?

There are Windows and MacOS versions also on the website that you linked to. Is the Linux version better in some way?

    Hi there
    @lx07

The OP doesn't have is Mac any more and also --If you can get the Windows version on W10 to work -- fine -- I just have mine up and running on Linux anyway so I know it works -- I don't really like to suggest a program to others without having tried it first !!!!

I also use The GIMP for editing -- that does work on Windows as well BTW that I have tried - but that's for a different purpose. I use Photoshop a lot too (Windows).

hope that clears it up !!!

    Cheers

Importing into Photo, but want to use my folders

Digikam was great. Thank you jimbo. Still no clue on Linux or samba is. Just wanted a program to organize the photos. Don't get into editing them too much. Guess I have been stuck in mac os so long that I can not stop thinking of Linux as Line-ex truck bed covering and Samba as that dip that fancy people like. I am just plain, but I want the computer to go fast so I do not spend so much time working. Rather play with GSD (German Shepherd Dog)
