Windows 10: Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists

Discus and support Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; Okay, here's a suggestion: Have you tried setting both values (StartMenuInit and JumpListItems_Maximum) to the value you want? 1. Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists

Wait, that's a new registry key for me. Is that one to set -- StartMenuInit? The only other key I know about besides JumpListItems_Maximum was Start_JumpListItems, which I did have set to a value higher than 12 earlier, but it didn't seem to make any difference, so I deleted it. I didn't try setting again after clearing the 2 appdata folders.

Is StartMenuInit different from Start_JumpListItems, or did you just use shorthand, and you really meant the same thing?

  2. I didn't see 'Start_JumpListItems' in the screenshots you have: The keys I saw that are the relevant ones were 'JumpListItems_Maximum', which in your screenshot was set at '15,' and 'StartMenuInit', a separate key, which is set at 11.

  3. Wow, I hadn't noticed that one before, nor had I seen it mentioned in this thread. Thanks for the lead on that setting. Unfortunately, I just tried setting that to 30 (decimal), same as the JumpListItems_Maximum. Still seems to have no effect. Max of 12 recent items appear if nothing is pinned, and 11 items combined if some are pinned (presumably 1 less because of extra space needed to separate and label each of the two lists). I believe that's exactly how it behaved before I changed anything.

  4. Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists

That sucks that nothing changed--now, interestingly enough, when I opened Regedit on my PC, I didn't see 'Start_JumpListItems' in that section of my registry either--just the 'JumpListItems_Maximum'. Now, I'm wondering if I should have messed with 'StartMenuInit.' *Redface

The only additional key I have is the 'JumpListItems_Maximum' set to whatever I choose and it works no matter what.

Hi Edwin, could you share the contents of the key in question?
(I think a regedit > export, and copy and paste)

Curious to see if this is doable on '7 too *092

  8. Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists

Note that on Windows 7, you just:

    1. Right-click an open part of the Taskbar
    2. Select Properties
    3. Select the Start Menu tab
    4. Click the Customize... button
    5. Set the value for "Number of recent items to display in Jump Litsts" at the bottom of the window.

The problem in Windows 10 is that is missing. Apparently for most users the JumpListItems_Maximum registry key addresses this.

For whatever reason, this doesn't work on any of my computers. They are members of the same domain (so maybe there's some group policy in effect, though this part of the registry seems to hold whatever values I set there), but other than that they have little in common.

Ah, I was wondering if this max key could be added to get crazy long recent/pinned jumplists, guess not.

  10. Keith, I've still not been able to get this to work on a single Windows 10 computer. To be fair, the total number of Win 10 systems I've tried is only 3, and all are part of the same domain. I'm the sysadmin though and now that we've talked about this issue, this has become a core reason users want to stick with Windows 7. Any suggestions what might be overriding the JumpListItems_Maximum key on my systems?

    Hi,

Very useful thread. Changing JumpListItems_Maximum worked for me.
I have a related query. I was sure that there used to be a couple of features of jump lists in W10 that have now disappeared, but now I am starting to doubt myself and I'd be grateful if other people could confirm.

    i) I thought that hovering over a jump list entry used to display the full pathname, which was useful when there were multiple entries with similar or the same names.
ii) I also thought that the context menu for a jump list item used to show the option to Open File Location.

    Have I dreamt this?

    Regards
    Jamie

  12. fraserj,

I do still see the full path name when I hover over an item in my Jump Lists (on both Start and the Taskbar). I wonder if the ability to display more than 11 items and seeing the full pathname are mutually exclusive. (I'd choose to display more than 11 items, given the choice).

On the other hand, like you, I no longer see an option to "Open file location," which I too recall seeing when I first upgraded to Windows 10. At that time, before I realized about the limit of 11 items, I had thought that Jump Lists in Windows 10 had improved on those in Windows 7.

I also had a new hypothesis about why JumpListItems_Maximum is not working for me. Could it be related to the Start settings (Settings -> Personalization -> Start):

I have everything set to On except "Show more tiles" and "Use Start full screen". What do others have for these?

On "Choose which folders appear on Start", I have everything set to On except for Videos and HomeGroup.

Could any of these settings be forcing the 11 item limit?

Increase Number of Items in Jump Lists

    Thanks for your reply GranitStatColin.

I should make it clear that when I first upgraded from 8.1 to 10 I was able to have more than 12 items in the jump lists. I am sure I remember finding a setting that allowed the original default to be increased, although that seems to have disappeared as others have mentioned. I chose 30 and it worked fine.

I think a recent W10 update broke / removed the functionality to have more jump list entries; and the ability (on my machine at least) to get a hover pathname and to open the file location. The fact that you still see the pathname when hovering gives me hope though.

Again, just to be clear, I did have the hover pathname and the open folder location working with 30 jump list entries.

    Regards

  14. I am still unable to get more than 12 items in a Jumplist.
I have tried modifying Start_JumpListItems, and adding JumpListItems_Maximum but those made no difference.

Taskbar and Start Menu Properties look like this:-

So just how does one solve this problem?

PS: I have just done a clean install and applied all available maintenance.

    Hi,
I am not sure if your clean install will have addressed this, but I have been able to eliminate some issues by unpinning the applications from the task bar, and then re-pinning them. Also clearing the jumplists by unsetting Start>Settings>Personalization>Start>Show recently opened... has helped.
