Infuriating double bind when trying to install latest Win 10 update

Every time I try to install the latest update to Windows 10 using the on-line method, I get an error message that tells me to turn off my antivirus program. Installing Windows 10 this way takes up to an hour. So I'm supposed to leave my computer unprotected for an hour, when according to what I've read, the average time for an unprotected PC to become infected with a virus or malware when it's online is 12 minutes? But when I try to install the update using the full-size standalone installer, I get a message that "this update is not applicable to your computer," and after spending half an hour trying to figure out which update is applicable to my computer, I gave up. Does anyone have any advice for getting around this dilemma?

    :)

    • I have tried to do the updates from a thumb-drive, from the prompt generated by Microsoft directing me to do the updates, and directly from the Windows10Upgrade folder in system drive C root folder.
    • I have tried to do a clean install (lose all the programs I have installed) and it will not complete correctly.
    • Common error codes presented on screen include 0x80070005 and 0xc00000fd
    • I unplugged all drives and USB connections except mouse and keyboard
    • I unplugged all thumb drives and smart cards and camera memory cards
    • I have tried to update with a minimal system load using MSCONFIG (using only Microsoft drivers)
    • All drivers are up to date.
    • I do want to keep my programs and data and just get the updates if at all possible
    • I have cleaned the registry with CCleaner
    • I have run Chkdsk on the System drive
Event viewer files can be downloaded at

Please help with this situation. There must be others encountering it. I have googled all the errors to no avail.

Where do you install this update from? And which antivirus do you use?

You can use ISO directly from Microsoft and update to 1709 version. Any later versions are not that big and the best is to update via Windows update.

If you ever need to turn off a non-Microsoft AV product you can turn on Windows defender.
Many of us have been using Windows defender for years without malware problems.

Which AV products/firewall products do you have installed that is always on?
Which AV products do you have installed that are manual?

  6. That's "if" your browsing other sires etc, while doing the update. If all your connected to in Windows update, there isn't too much to worry about, IMHO.

Once update takes over, there's nothing to protect from, system files are locked and nothing but update process can do anything to them. During larger updates it's not even advisable to do anything else.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. I've got 10 computers on my home network that have been running with nothing but Windows defender now since the days when Windows 10 was ONLY in the beta "insider" stage. No virus or malware infections here.

The NAT firewall in any decent router will provide excellent protections against infections that are pushed to computers. Common sense browsing and email habits will provide the best protection against infections that the user invites in.

    • I am using IObit Advanced System Care Pro Ultimate and IObit Malware Fighter Pro. I use IMF because my impression is that there is a small but detectable improvement in speed compared to Windows Defender and IMF also seems a little less temperamental. We use a recently purchased Netgear cable modem and a new TP-Link router which is essentially the previous Archer 2000 series.
    • Concerning updating Windows: I have tried using the online update tool. I have tried using a bootable thumb drive with the ISO. I have tried using a bootable DVD with the ISO. I have tried installing the ISO while connected to the Internet and while disconnected from the Internet. I have tried it with security software on and with all security software turned off. No matter what variation or permutation of installation method and computer settings I try, something always goes wrong. In my opinion Microsoft has not done a good job of changing from their old update methods to this Linux-like method they use now. I converted one of our old PCs to Linux Mint MATE and just updated from 18.1 to 18.3 and as always, the OS update completed with no hitches whatsoever.

Infuriating double bind when trying to install latest Win 10 update

Okay, folks, I was able to install the Windows 10 Fall Seeyalater Update, or whatever it's called. The upgrade succeeded only after I completely uninstalled all IObit products. I have reinstalled most of them, and the computer is doing the other thing that has infuriated me since I installed the SSD drive, which is freeze and hang all the time. I have now uninstalled IObit Malware Fighter but have left everything else. If the machine runs smoothly now, great. If it doesn't, I will progressively uninstall IObit programs one at a time to see if that fixes the problem. *Sad (sigh) It's a shame; up till now, I have been extremely satisfied with IObit products.
