    Inheriting Permissions when Moving Files

    Hi,

we have a fairly complex folder structure within the same volume. Major folders in this structure have specific folder permissions that regulate file access within. One major folder is for developing content many users have write permission, the other one is for archiving originals very few users have edit rights, the third one is for publishing finished files read-only access for most users, edit for very few.

As documents mature, we produce PDFs. These are moved to the Publication folder, while the originals typically xlsx or docx files are moved to the Archive folder.

We noticed that although we have enabled “inheriting permissions”, file permissions are not updated when dragging and dropping the files from the Development folder to the Archive or Publication folders. The only remedy currently seems to be to open the file and save it over itself.

Since this process is very cumbersome we have thousands of files that are being processed, I was wondering if there was a better, more automated way of updating the permissions.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    :)

    Inherit permissions when moving files

Can anyone please tell me how I can set Windows 10 up, so moved files will inherit the permissions from the destination folder?

I enabled the inheritance option on the parent folder and that works when copying files, but not when moving files.

In previous versions of Windows I could resolve this issue, by adding MoveSecurityAttributes in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer (as described in the article below), but this does not seem to have any effect in Windows 10.

Any help really appreciated and thanks in advance Inheriting Permissions when Moving Files :)

  3. Move a file into a folder with a non-inherited ACL rule, the file will not inherit ACL from parent, why?

    Hi,

I have an issue to setup ACL rule correctly when I move files around folders, and it seems a Windows bug...

When I move a file into a folder with a non-inherited ACL rule, the file will not inherit ACL from its parent.

    For example,

D:\Folder has an explicit rule on it, which say user A has read permission of it.

And a file "Iamfile" is created in D:\ which will inherit rules from D:\ correctly.

At this moment, if you move the file "iamfile" to D:\Folder from Windows Explorer, anything is fine, iamfile will inherit permission from D:\Folder.

However, it you use "MOVE" command to do the same operation, the file "iamfile" will not inherit permission from D:\Folder, and all original rules inherit from D:\ will become explicit rules on D:\Folder\iamfile.

    I'm not so sure it's a by-design or it's a bug, but I think its later.

Can anyone help me to check this problem? or how can I preserve inheriting permission from its parent when I using command line tool to do that?

    Thanks.

    No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
