Windows 10: Input lag with HDMI, but not with Display port?

I've tried it on two different displays, monitor and FireTV. The lag with display port + monitor is fine, but hdmi is horrendous with either and FireTV doesn't have DP. I see mentions of different configs to help with HDMI lag, but I'm getting a solid half second of lag. Completely unplayable when I'm trying to wrek n00bz in Halo (can't even teabag).

Are my HDMI cables junk? They're Amazon basics.

It's a "gaming spec'd" desktop (idk I followed some buyer's guide and put it together)

the monitor has hdmi,dvi and vga input , i am using now the dvi input but i want to use display port to hdmi and there is only one monitor under display settings

Do you have another HDMI source you can connect to the monitor, like a DVD player? That would rule out the HDMI input on the monitor being bad, then you would have to look at the cable and/or graphics card.

Do you have the latest drivers installed for the graphics card?

If new drivers or reloading graphics card drivers doesn't fix it, the next thing I would suggest is to try the display port to HDMI adapter a couple of us have suggested already with a regular HDMI cable. If your cable is bad or you just need an adapter because for some reason a straight cable won't work - spending $20 on the adapter is a lot cheaper than new graphics card. I just installed my GTX 970 card a week ago and I had plenty of HDMI cables so that is why I went with the adapter instead of buying a new display port to hdmi cable.
