Windows 10: Insert key not working

When I press the Insert key on my laptop in apps that make use of the Insert key, nothing happens. For instance in Freeplane, pressing the Insert key is supposed to create a child node on a mind map, but it doesn't work. I have also tried to use the Insert key in Freemind and in MS Word with typeover toggling enabled in the options, but it doesn't work in these apps either.


This only happens when I am logged in as me. When I am logged in as a different user, the Insert key works fine. For instance, in Freeplane, when I am logged in as a different user, it does create a new child node.


However, if, when I am logged in as me, I press shift+insert in Freeplane instead of just insert, it does work and a parent node is created on a Mind Map.


When, while logged in as me, I go to keyboardchecker.com in my browser and press the Insert key, keyboardchecker.com tells me that the Insert key has been pressed. So it seems that the Insert key works in a browser, but doesn't work in other apps.


I have looked at the various things in my system tray and tried quitting anything that looks like it might involve some kind of hot key, but I still can't get Insert to work.


How can I get insert working?

• On what application are you trying to use the Insert Key?
• Are you referring to Overtype mode in Word?
• Where are you trying to enable/disable the Insert Key?

 

Cat Disabled Insert Key

The cat stepped on some combination of keys that effected the insert command.

Now if I try to insert text, it just overwrites whatever is already written.

There's no "insert" key on my keyboard, only a "delete" key located pretty much

in her favorite path across the keyboard (but only when I'm working--of course!)

 

How to get Insert Key to work

This has been a constant source of frustration with Microsoft in General and Windows 10 in particular. The insert key no longer toggles between insert and overwrite. Is there a way to get this to work? I have version 1903.
