Windows 10: Insider Dev Tour 2019 Community Event Proposal

The Insider Dev Tour is an annual Microsoft Developer event run around the world. It focuses primarily on Microsoft 365 topics (Windows development, Office development, Graph, web, and more). It's all about developers, and focuses on code, technology, and scenarios. You do not need to be an Insider to attend the event or speak at it, although we certainly encourage everyone to be Insiders!

Last year, we had an amazing series of events with 41 cities, over 5000 attendees, and a 167 NSAT -- higher than most any other event. The developers attending the events loved them. MVPs, RDs, and the local community leads did an awesome job last year, and based on that, it was a no-brainer to do it again this year.

Event goals

Build/grow local M365 developer interest and excitement

Activate the developer community to try new areas of M365 development like Graph and Teams development

Engage and activate Windows, Office Developer, and other MVPs and RDs to deliver content, build broader reputation with their community, and then further engage the local communities

Find local talent that are potential future MVPs and RDs, and provide a structured way for them to step up and starting building their reputation with the local developer community

This event is optimized for the community of MVPs and RDs as the leads, but teams may be made up of any combination of community members, RDs, and MVPs. We also encourage finding NEW talent, up-and-comers, who may be MVP candidates in the future. Not everyone on the speaking team needs to be an industry veteran.

What does it mean to propose to "run" an event?

Microsoft runs the big anchor events. We don't have many of those. The bulk of the tour is made up of the local community events, run by people just like you. For local events, event owners are responsible for:

Proposing an event and venue

Creating a top notch and diverse speaker team and event team

Organizing rehearsals for speakers

Picking from the available content tracks

Submitting a budget, in advance, for pre-payment of expenses for venue, catering, signage, and other event fees.

Arranging for your event team to print signage, procure any giveaways, etc.

Participating on Microsoft Teams to get the content and materials

Running a quality event on the event day

Ensuring as many attendees as possible fill out the eval forms

For viewing parties, event owners are responsible for:

Proposing an event and venue

Working with Microsoft to hold the event at a day when we'll live stream the Insider Dev Tour regional or global event

Ensuring the venue has appropriate bandwidth and AV equipment for a quality viewing experience

Creating a top notch and diverse event team

Submitting expenses for catering (typically pizza/subs), signage, and any other minor event fees

Arranging for your event team to print signage, procure any giveaways, etc.

Participating on Microsoft Teams to get the content and materials

Running a quality event on the event day

Ensuring as many attendees as possible fill out the eval forms

Content

Speaking of content, we took your feedback from last year and have made some important adjustments.

Last year, you said you want more flexibility with the content: You would like to use your own demos at times, and just know what our uber messages are that the session must align to.

You all also said you want the ability to adjust the schedule to better suit the area audience, and your speaker expertise

Microsoft will advise on which core sessions to include, but with guidance, allow you all to change around the rest of the content for the event, picking from the two-track catalog, with one slot reserved (if desired) for MVP content that was not provided by Microsoft. We may able to accept high-quality substitute demos in some cases.

Like last year, the event will include an opening 60-minute keynote followed by a number of 30-minute sessions. The keynote will cover the best of Build all-up. The 30-minute sessions will cover a number of topics, potentially including: Microsoft Graph, Windows Desktop and XAML, .NET Core, ASP.NET, Progressive Web Apps and HTML/JS dev, Office/Teams add-ins, AI/ML, WSL/Terminal, and more, plus, if desired, a 30-minute session of your own. Including the keynote and sign-in time, the event day typically runs from 8:30 to 5:30 +/-, but can be adjusted for local norms.

Unlike last year, we're planning to make more content available, and to give you more flexibility with the content and schedule, as long as the event is awesome, the event and sessions goals are met, and the audience is wowed and happy. We'll still need to maintain a level of consistency between events, and so will need to review the plan, but it won't be as rigid as last year.

This survey is to propose a single location for the Insider Dev Tour 2019

Events will run primarily in the second two thirds of June 2019. If you wish to run more than one event, or more than one type of event, please include separate submissions for each.

Announcing the Insider Dev Tour 2018

Hello friends!

Yes, the rumor-mill was right (this time!). It’s time for the Insider Dev Tour.

Each year after Build, we run a world-wide event tour to bring all the latest technology to you, in person. This year we’ve extended the event to even more locations through our partnerships with Windows, the Windows Insider program, and our developer and Insider MVPs.

The Insider Dev Tour is for developers and code curious folks interested in building intelligent experiences today using the latest Microsoft technologies. It’s also for those who want a peek into the future of what kinds of tech will be super-important in every industry. This event is open to anyone who can read code or WANTS to read code– beginner, expert, student, or hobbyist developer.

You’ll learn about Artificial Intelligence, the latest for desktop development, Microsoft 365, Progressive Web Apps, Office for developers, Mixed Reality, Microsoft Graph, and much more. You’ll learn little-known tricks and tips that will help you be more efficient and awesome in your careers, no matter what those careers might be.

The tour is an opportunity to connect directly with leads and engineers from Redmond, as well as regional industry leads and Microsoft Developer MVPs. We’re excited to meet you in person.
