Install W10 after 7/29. Lose activation if accessibility turned off

First I legitimately have vision problems and the screen magnifier helps. Updated to Win 10 after 7/29 using the accessibility option. If I disable the accessibility settings the PC says not activated. Turn back on setting and PC activates.

Listening to the voice babel on for what seems to be forever is very annoying. Options?

    :)

How to downgrade to windows 8.1 when I cant access the settings menu?

Yes, could be OK, otherwise it will install but will not be activated so after 30 days it will keep turning off and lose personalisation functions.

I've updated to Windows 10 once, do I keep the update if I switch back to Windows 7?

So, if I install W10 now, what happens if I decide to go back to windows 7 after July 29?

The free upgrade offered for users needing assistive technologies is just what the name says. Quote from Windows 10 upgrade for assistive technology users:

It means that if you really do not need assistive technologies like text to speech, magnifier and such, you per conditions of this offer are not eligible for it. Microsoft has every right to tie activation to use of assistive technologies.

A valid option is to buy a license and change product key to activate Windows (tutorial).

What on earth are you talking about? I didn't say anything about your disabilities, not even hint that you have some or not. Please read my post again and tell me where and how I said something about you?

I only stated a fact: those users needing assistive technologies can upgrade for free. As Microsoft has intended this offer for those users really needing assistive technologies, they are in their full right to tie activation and use of assistive technologies together.

If anyone could just upgrade for free using this offer and turn off / disable assistive technologies, nobody in need of an upgrade would pay for it, turning a handshake from Microsoft for those needing help to unethical piracy.

It's really quite simple: you need assistive technologies, you can upgrade for free. If you don't need them, pay for a license.

Maybe the MS help desk person who remotely INSTALLED Win 10 on my PC already running an activated install of Win 8.1 should have mentioned my PC would lose it's activation anytime I don't want to hear the babble. I wanted magnification not incessant babble.

My attempt to install Win 10 failed due to the wrong version of Win 10 on it's disability upgrade site. The install would not activate properly even though I had Win 8.1. The MS help desk guy knew this and did the install remotely.

It sounds like you have something else going on with activation. We can help you troubleshoot it.

Right click on the start icon, click Command Prompt (Admin). Enter the following command:

    slmgr /dlv

That should give you a result similar to:

Then run showkey from this forum:
    Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

If you click on the product keys that it shows, it will blank them out for you. You should get something like this:

Hopefully Showkey will show us more than one product key from your computer.

Please post both of your results here and we might be able to help more.

Here are the two files. As I said the MS help desk remotely installed Win 10 on my machine. Only thing I did was agree to download their "remote" and run it. He then downloaded a different ISO than was pointed in the link below. Extracted the files to a folder he placed on my desktop and ran them. I was never asked for a key unlike the ISO on the link below.

First, you need to delete your response and blank out all the product keys. Second, the problem with your activation is that it looks like the computer came with Windows 8 Professional. Someone then install Windows Starter retail (which is home version). Now your Windows 10 is activated with a MAK product key which makes no sense at all. MAK keys are used by corporations with volume licensing.

So the first thing I would try is go to settings, updates and security, the activation tab on the left, click change product key, and enter the product key for Windows 8 RTM Professional that Showkey is showing. If that doesn't work, then I would down a regular, just plain Windows 10 ISO file and do a clean install - which will wipe everything you have now, so backup what you want to keep, and it should pick up the Windows 8 professional product key stored on the computer and install Windows 10 professional and activate.

The last time that I heard anything was that Microsoft Activation Servers were still handing out upgrade activations, even if you don't have a digital entitlement stored on their server already.

Your problem has nothing to do with Assistive technologies and it's that MAK product key/activation that is causing your problem.

I bought the PC a month ago. Fairly new Dell 7010. Cannot vouch for the providence but person selling always has a number in stock. He claims he buys from Dell after they come off lease. I understand what you are saying about the key weirdness, but the PC never seems to lose activation unless I fully shut off assisted tech.

How accurate is the info from ShowKey?

A while ago I tried to recover another Win key using a similar program. The machine in question was downgraded by the previous owner from Win8pro-64bit to Win7pro-32bit. I wanted to upgrade to Win10pro-64bit. When I went to activate the new Win10pro-64bit install it asked for a key like what happened recently. The Win 7 and Win 8 keys I "recovered" were rejected. I ended up doing a fresh install of Win 7-64bit and activated it using a spare Win 7 pro key I owned. I then upgraded once more to Win10-64bit and it activated fine.

It's just awful, totally inaccurate and sends all keys to P2P sites... *Think

BTW: Have you tried Navy's suggestion - you need to do it before MS cuts the life-line.

(PS: What up with MS support installing a Volume licence...? MS needs to do some serious audits on these outsourced support people, I think)

I think this is the answer:

I don't think the volume (MAK) license came from MS.

    Plausible.

Worrying though, is a refurbisher buys Dell and installs a VL (why?) when it has a valid Win 8 upgrade licence. Then MS support trots along and upgrades/repairs without checking the licence?...

Some crazy going on out there...

I have bought from the guy multiple times. In the past the Dell's he sold came with Win 10 activated. This time the two I bought came with Win 8.1. I asked why and he said it wasnt't free to upgrade anymore so he just passes them through as they came from Dell.
