  1. Installation media boots to command prompt

Sounds like a good idea. If no luck, try your install media on another computer.
--- Also I though you had the same problem on both the laptop keyboard and the external USB keyboard.

EDIT: Since the issue happens on both the default internal keyboard and an external USB keyboard, double-checking system settings might be helpful.
--- Also using a USB Win10 boot media, allow the default internal keyboard to be recognized might be helpful.

  2. I have a friends laptop and I am trying to install Windows 10 on their Windows which came originally with Windows 10 or 8. Its an HP laptop 15-ba042nr when i boot to the Windows 10 install disc or the Windows 10 USB installer it opens a command prompt before anything else. I formatted the drive outside of the computer i converted from mbr to gpt. I tried a different hard drive. Ive never seen an install disk go directly to command prompt. And once its in command prompt trying to type in there isnt working properly. For example ill type the letter e and what shows up is ^E or i type d and it shows ^D most letters will be upper case with the ^ before the letter. I type h and it functions as backspace. i have 0 idea what to do and a search of "Windows install disc boots to command prompt" yields no results...Thanks

    :)

Can you use the Command Prompt from the booted installation media or Repair CD, as shown in Option One of

    Command Prompt at Startup?

At first screen after media boots, press Shift + F10 to get a Command Prompt.

This makes the OS inert so that it cannot interfere at all.

    Disk locked while installing 14257

You should be at the prompt when you open Admin Command Prompt, or the booted installation or repair media's Command Prompt. Nothing was said about Changing Directory.

I've just booted from known working install media to see exactly what it does when booting. The sequence of events is...

    • Windows logo on a black screen
    • circling dots appear beneath the logo
    • light blue 'Please wait' screen with circling dots
    • a command prompt window (very briefly)
    • the initial Setup page appears

Do you see steps 1-3? If so, it appears you have stopped at step 4, suggesting that something on the disc cannot be read.

Does the disc boot properly in another machine? If so, try cleaning the laptop's drive lens then try booting from the disc again.

If not, make new install media with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, either as a bootable USB, on an ISO that you can burn to another disc. At Step 8 in Option One of this tutorial you can choose between making a USB or an ISO.

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

  8. Installation media boots to command prompt

I do not believe its a keyboard malfunction because same thing happens with usb keyboard. Is that what you mean by external? I tried installing using an external optical drive also but get the same results.

I created a windows 10 x64 installer via microsoft media creation tool. I have used 2 different drives that i know be in working order. I also created a dvd installer via media creation tool as well..
When i boot to the DVD i see the circles. i didnt notice windows logo but above the circles had the HP logo. before that i get the boot to cd/dvd option.

When installing via the usb installer since i have both x32 and x64 on it i choose the x64 option and then i see the spinning circles but boots to command prompt after that. i dont see anything before that.

I know all my installers are good. I even tried to boot to an official windows 8.1 disc and the same thing happens..

I have reset bios to default. I made sure the secure boot is turned on. I guess i could try turning it off to allow legacy but i know for a fact i do not need to do that with these installers. but i could try. any other thoughts?

The caret before each letter suggests that one of the "ctrl" keys is stuck. This probably means that when you use an external keyboard, the built-in keyboard still functions.
