Windows 10: Installed HP Laserjet 1018 printer driver. Windows 10 sees printer, but print manager shows...

Using Windows 10. I have an older printer (HP Laserjet 1018) and so had to download and install the driver. Driver accepted by Windows. When I open a document in MS Word 2016 and go to File > Print, the HP Laserjet 1018 is shown as the printer to print to. But when I click on "print", it doesn't print. In the printer manager, it shows the document in the print queue, and under "status" it says "printer - error". I know the printer works fine as I use it every day with other computers. I installed the printer to the printer port LPT1. The computer is connected via USB port. The only thing I can think of is, are LPT 1 and the USB port not matching up properly? Do I need to have the printer installed to a different port? I would think Windows can see what port the printer is plugged into and automatically inform MS Word to print to that port, wouldn't it? Any suggestions?

I am trying to install my HP laserjet 1018 printer on my Windows 10, version 1809 I attempted the following method after connecting printer over USB,

Click add printer > the printer that I want isn't listed>Add a local printer or network printer with manual setting>IN Use an existing port USB001( virtual printer port for USB) was selected > clicked on windows update button > then in manufacture column selected
HP, but in printer column I am unable to find Laserjet 1018 printer driver on repeatedly updating driver by clicking windows update

But on performing the same method on my old laptop with an older version of Win 10, I was able to install this driver.

It's a pretty old printer with drivers back to XP so not supported any longer, so it may be a hat trick trying to keep it through further version changes.

They have decent wireless HP and Canon printers now on Amazon for $50 that will print from every device in the house including phones. I was surprised at their quality for the ones I've tried.

 

HP Printer Problem


I've recently run into problems with my HP LaserJet 2100 printer. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the device and Windows 10 succesfully downloads the relevant printer driver but no success printing. Looking at the device in Device Manager I can see the message:

Device LPTENUM\Hewlett-PackardHP_LaserJet_2100_Series\5&24c65149&0&LPT1.4 requires further installation.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm running on build 10586.11.
