Windows 10: Installed RAM and Usable RAM aren't the same

    Installed RAM and Usable RAM aren't the same


    I have 16GB of RAM installed in my computer. It shows 2x8GB in the BIOS, and when I select "properties" from This PC, I see 16.0GB under Installed memory. However, it says that only 7.93GB is usable. I have tried going into msconfig -> boot -> advanced options -> unchecking the Maximum memory box. I have also tried setting a number with the max memory box checked. What else can I do?


    I am using Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19041 Build 19041, an ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac motherboard, an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU, and 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2666

    Usable RAM

    The RAM is recognized. In BIOS it shows exact amount installed, Windows also shows exact amount installed but limits usable RAM.

    Newly installed RAM is not usable.

    I had 2 gb ram during windows 10 upgrade. I added 1 gb new ram. Now it is showing Installed ram is 3 gb but usable only 1.68 gb. My os s 32 bit. Please help to make it use all the 3gb ram.

    Hi There,

    I've just upgraded my pc from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Windows seems to have detected this upgrade but why does it show as only 4GB RAM available. The following is what I have tried so far with no luck:

    • I have tried the msconfig method on ensuring maximum memory is not checked.
    • physically removed the new RAM and reinstalled it
    Any thoughts/suggestions on how i can resolve this matter?
