Intel Releases Internet of Things Developer Kit for Makers

Check it out. Anybody using this yet?

To cater to the growing Internet of Things (IoT) market, Intel today extended the Intel® IoT Developer Kit by releasing the Intel® XDK IoT Edition, simplifying the development of IoT apps written in JavaScript. The tool provides makers with an integrated approach to create, run and debug apps on Intel® Edison and Intel® Galileo boards. In addition, Intel® XDK IoT Edition can be used to develop an HTML5 companion app that runs on phones, tablets and PCs to control the IoT devices. Intel® XDK IoT Edition is available as a free download for Windows, OS X and Ubuntu Linux.

New and updated Microsoft IoT Kits

Earlier this month, we released to customers around the world a new Windows Insider version of Windows 10 IoT Core that supports the brand new Intel® Joule™. We’ve been working hard on Windows 10 IoT Core, we’re proud of the quality and capability of IoT Core Insider releases and we’re humbled by the enthusiasm that you’ve shown in using it to build innovative devices and downright cool Maker projects.

We’ve spoken to thousands of you around the world at both commercial IoT events and Maker Faires and in many of these conversations, you have asked for better ways to get started – how to find the quickest path to device experimentation using Windows 10 and Azure. We’ve heard your feedback and today I’d like to talk about how this is manifesting in two new IoT starter kits from our partners: The Microsoft Internet of Things Pack for Raspberry Pi 3 by Adafruit, and the brand new Seeed Grove Starter Kit for IoT based on Raspberry Pi by Seeed Studio.

Back in September of 2015 we partnered with Adafruit to make a Raspberry Pi 2 based Windows 10 IoT Core Starter Kit available. This kit was designed to get you started quickly and easily on your path of learning both electronics and Windows 10 IoT Core and the Raspberry Pi 2. Adafruit had tremendous success with this kit, and we’re happy to announce that they are releasing a new version of it.

This new kit keeps its focus on helping you get started quickly and easily in the world of IoT, but includes an upgrade to the new Raspberry Pi 3.

The best thing about this update? The price is the same as before.

The newest kit available is from Seeed Studio, called the Grove Starter Kit for IoT based on Raspberry Pi, builds on the great design work that Seeed and their partner Dexter Industries have done around the Grove connector. It utilizes a common connector from the large array of available sensors to simplify the task of connecting to the device platform. This helps you focus on being creative and not worrying about soldering electrical connections.

The selection of compatible modular devices extends way beyond those that are included in the kit, making this applicable to starters, Makers and Maker Pros. The Seeed Kit can be ordered from the Microsoft Store, Seeed Studio or you can also acquire the kit from Digi-Key.

We’re excited about how these kits help enable everyone, from those with no experience to those who prototype for a living, to quickly get started making new devices with Windows 10 IoT Core, Azure IoT and the Raspberry Pi 3.

Hands on with Microsoft's IoT starter kits

Microsoft puts its brand on non-Windows IoT hardware, ready for Azure.

It's all very well having a set of tools that can be used to build a back end for Internet of Things applications, like Microsoft's Azure IoT Suite. What you also need are devices that are ready to use with it, and more importantly, a path from those prototype devices to products.

So it wasn't surprising to see Microsoft use its recent Build 2016 conference to launch a selection of IoT developer kits based on a range of different chipsets and operating systems.

Microsoft's made the sensible decision to partner with well-known maker companies to launch its first certified devices. They include Seeed, Adafruit, and Sparkfun, with devices based on a range of different chipsets including the popular ESP8266 and Intel's Edison. The kits come with a collection of sensors, as well as online tutorials with sample code hosted on GitHub.

Windows 10 is a key part of Microsoft's plan to be more of an Internet of things player. The catch is that few people see Microsoft putting the pieces together.

Open the box of one of the starter kits and you'll find a maker board, a selection of sensors and LEDs, as well as jumper wires and connectors. The Edison board comes with a Grove shield and a selection of sensors that plug straight into the shield's connectors -- as well as an LCD display and a set of solenoids.

That means you can start to build devices that have both inputs and outputs, showing users what they're doing in conjunction with the Azure cloud service. The Adafruit and Sparkfun devices come with breadboards so you can start adding your own hardware, designing and building your own sensor sets using devices from any electronics store or catalog.

That's the most important thing about these devices: you're not constrained to building any one project (or for that matter using either of the prebuilt solutions from the Azure IoT Suite).

They're pure 'maker' hardware, ready for freeform experimentation and for engineers to start using as the heart of a sensor project. What's key to them all, however, is that Microsoft has chosen to build its starter kits around connected boards, all with built-in Wi-Fi (or in the case of the Raspberry Pi 2 boards, with bundled USB Wi-Fi adapters).

At Build I had the opportunity to try out one of the Intel Edison-based starter kits, using it to build a simple connected temperature monitor that delivered data via Wi-Fi to a pre-configured Azure IoT Suite service. Microsoft provides Azure IoT Suite users with two sample services: one for predictive maintenance, and one for remote monitoring. The sample remote monitor takes temperature and humidity readings from a device, and uses them to trigger alerts using Azure's Stream Processing and Event Hub services, as well as graphing the results in real time on a hosted web site...
