Windows 10: Intel to Collaborate with SiTime on MEMS Timing for 5G Modems

What’s New: Intel and SiTime Corporation*, a provider of MEMS timing solutions, have announced that they will work together on robust, tiny and low-power microelectromechanical (MEMS) timing solutions for Intel’s 5G modem platforms. SiTime’s MEMS solutions provide enhanced reliability and withstand environmental stressors. They are used in consumer electronics, networking and telecom infrastructure, healthcare, and industrial and automotive applications.

Why It’s Important: In partnership with SiTime, Intel will be able to offer customers MEMS timing solutions that enable modems to better withstand vibration, shock and rapid temperature changes, which can interrupt the timing signal. These MEMS solutions with a MHz resonator design use substantially less power than legacy quartz solutions and can run longer and will meet the high-performance requirements of Intel 5G modem platforms. Intel 5G platforms will become available in 2019.

CES 2017: Intel announces 5G modem

Chip giant Intel has announced its 5G modem at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas, calling it a "milestone for the industry" as it will allow companies to develop and launch 5G solutions earlier than previously anticipated.

According to Intel, the modem is the first to enable 5G trials anywhere in the world because its single chip supports both millimetre-wave (mmWave) and sub-6GHz spectrum bands, incorporating Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), beam-forming technology, and advanced channel coding.

MIMO sends multiple channels of data at the same time, allowing users to have peak performances simultaneously, while beam-forming technology uses antenna arrays to steer a beam to where a user is.

Intel's 5G modem should support speeds of over 5Gbps and ultra low latency, with Intel expecting it to be used initially in the home broadband, mobile, and automotive industries.

The modem also integrates with Intel's 28GHz 5G Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC), as well as its 4G XMM 7360 LTE modem for 4G/5G interworking.

Intel also used its CES announcement to launch its 5G-ready GO platform, which is intended to help autonomous vehicles connect using cloud computing, with two GO development kits for its Atom and Xeon processors also announced.

As part of the GO platform launch, Intel has partnered with BMW and Mobileye, and said it will have 40 autonomous cars on the roads by mid year. Intel also recently acquired 15 percent of digital mapping company HERE as part of its push into autonomous vehicles...

Intel to Bring 5G to Mobile PCs in 2nd half of 2019

Intel is continuing to build new products and collaborations for 5G across the network, client and cloud.

Today, Intel announced it is collaborating with Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft to bring 5G connectivity to Windows PCs with Intel® XMM™ 8000 series commercial 5G modems. Intel expects the first high-performing 5G-connected PCs to surface in the market in the second half of 2019.

Intel Set to Launch Their New 5G Modems in 2019

Intel today announced substantial advances in its wireless product roadmap to accelerate the adoption of 5G. Highlights include the introduction of the Intel XMM 8000 series, Intel's first family of 5G new radio (5G NR) multi-mode commercial modems, and Intel's latest LTE modem, the Intel XMM 7660. Intel also announced it has successfully completed a full end-to-end 5G call based on its early 5G silicon, the Intel 5G Modem - a key milestone in its development. Finally, the Intel XMM 7560 modem unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2017 has achieved gigabit-class speeds.

"Intel is committed to delivering leading 5G multi-mode modem technology and making sure the transition to 5G is smooth," said Dr. Cormac Conroy, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Communication and Devices Group. "Our investments in a full portfolio of modem technologies and products are critical to achieving the vision of seamless 5G connectivity."

5G is more than the device, it requires a cloud-ready, virtualized 5G network. Intel is unique in bringing the network, cloud and clients together in a powerful end-to-end 5G solution.

A summary of Intel's wireless roadmap updates includes:

Intel XMM 8000 series: Intel's family of commercial 5G multi-mode modems, operating in both sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave global spectrum bands. The series will enable a range of devices to connect to 5G networks - from PCs and phones to fixed wireless consumer premise equipment (CPE) and even vehicles.

Intel XMM 8060: Intel's first commercial 5G modem is capable of delivering multi-mode support for the full 5G non-standalone and standalone NR, as well as various 2G, 3G (including CDMA) and 4G legacy modes. Expected to ship in commercial customer devices in mid-2019, the Intel XMM 8060 will accelerate deployment of 5G-ready devices prior to anticipated broad deployment of 5G networks in 2020.

Intel XMM 7660: Intel's latest LTE modem delivers Cat-19 capabilities and supports speeds up to 1.6 gigabits per second. This powerful LTE modem features advanced multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), carrier aggregation and a broad range of band support. It will ship in commercial devices in 2019.

Additionally, Intel is helping set the pace for the industry with the Intel 5G Modem. Announced at CES 2017, Intel's early 5G silicon is successfully making calls over the 28GHz band. Along with the Intel Mobile Trial Platform, Intel technology is at the heart of dozens of trials around the world, giving Intel and the industry valuable learnings about the technologies that will make 5G a reality. Wi-Fi will play an increasingly important role for mobile networks as we move to 5G. Intel will continue its Wi-Fi leadership by commercializing gigabit Wi-Fi soon and plan to deliver the next generation of Wi-Fi, 802.11ax starting in 2018.
