Interesting patent shows off Intel’s foldable tablet with tri-fold design

Back in 2018, Intel showed off a dual-screen folding PC concept dubbed Tiger Rapids with 7.9-inch displays. It looks like Intel also filed a patent for a tablet that becomes smartphone when folded.

As pictured below, the patented device is seen to be a carry a display that can be folded. In the description section, Intel says that the patent shows off a device with foldable display panels which can be folded and the device offers multiple views – front, back, top, bottom, right and left.

The patent drawing revealed that the Intel’s device features a tri-fold design and it could be used as a smartphone, tablet and a 2-in-1.

Foldable phones and tablets trend is undeniably on the rise, with big-name such as Microsoft, Samsung are rumoured to be working on their innovative foldable devices with flexible display and a hinge mechanism.

While Samsung plans to release its foldable phone in the first half of 2019, Microsoft’s foldable device is expected to launch later this year.

The Intel patent is unlikely to convert into a real product. It is possible that the patented device is intended as a reference design to show manufacturing partners what’s possible.

According to new findings, Microsoft is optimizing its Windows 10 operating system for foldable devices, so we can expect even more companies to get involved with the trend and launch devices phone that can open up like a tablet and fit into your pocket.

Apple Seeks to Patent MacBook Air Design, OLED Brightness

I'm sorry, but isn't this just a logical design step in removing the unnecessary bulk of notebook, if you're trying to make it as thin as possible? It's kinda like Apple patenting multi-touch screens, even though that it is the next logical step in screen technology - most of us have more than 1 digit, don't we?

Hmmm... maybe I should go and attempt to patent the spherical truncated icosahedron shape of a soccer ball....

    Future of Windows Phone 2017

I'm not certain that those photos are actual photos. There have been a few people that have artfully photoshopped what they imagine a Surface Phone would look like.

Anyhow, this is what I'm getting from all this:

Windows Mobile is dead. But so is Windows RT that was used on tablets. Now did Microsoft stop making tablets because RT didn't pan out for them? No, they started making Windows tablets that run the "desktop" version of Windows. So could they be paving the
way to a Windows Phone that also uses the same architecture as their desktop/laptop platform?

Actually that's exactly what Andromeda has been said to be. A single operating system that's modular by design. Instead of an OS that has everything in it for any hardware configuration possible on any computer therefore making it necessary to design a separate
mobile operating system for smartphones, Andromeda is said to be able to be installed with only the parts of the OS that are necessary for a particular electronic device. So why make an operating system that's modular if Microsoft is only interested in the
desktop/laptop platform? Or are they interested in other platforms such as smartphones and mini tablets?

Also, Microsoft now has a patent on a folding screen that will fit inside your pocket.

    Let's take another look.

    • Electronic device that fits in your pocket.
    • Foldable screen that allows a larger tablet sized screen which coincidentally would be better apt for keeping a single operating system across all types of devices.
    • Operating system that modular and therefore able to adapt to a much wider variety of electronic devices.
Are they paving the way to a Surface Phone or at least experimenting with the idea or what?
