Windows 10: Internet connection problem on Windows 2000 VM

My VM is using virtual hardware version 5. The internet speed is 1Gbps on the VM but my host internet is nowhere near that speed. Heck, sometimes I can't even get 1Mbps out of it.

I'm still having my problem; replies seem to have dried up.

I tried editing the VMX file as stated on https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mi...externalId=507 to no avail. I also read that use can use SysPrep to change the USID, however SysPrep doesn't seem to be available on Win 2000.

 

Do you have the latest service pack for 2000? Did you try my suggestion of using it in bridge mode?

Hi there

If using VMWARE did you install VMware tools on the VM. For Virtual box it's VBOX additions.

I'm getting no problems with W98 VM with the HOST wifi adapter as a 5GHZ USB3 wifi adapter. VM thinks it's Ethernet LAN !!! and works brilliantly. USB3 and wifi - especially 5GHZ were still science fiction dreams in the time of W98 !!!!

Host is running latest version of W10 pro X-64 VMware workstation rel 12.1.

@jimbo45 The VM already came with VMware Tools. I'm using Windows 10 Home X64 and my version of VMware Workstation is 12.5.2.

I'll fish out a copy of W2K and see what happens. I've only got W2K Pro though.

I didn't use too much of W2K as I thought W23K (Win2003) was far better for desktops and I even fiddled around with W23K server to make it work really well as a desktop OS too.

Might take me a few days as I've got a couple of other projects on currently but I'll definitely have a go for you -- installing this type of VM on decent hardware shouldn't take too long --I'll probably have to filch an ISO from somewhere but I've got a valid key.

You don't need to, I'll give you the link to the website where I downloaded the VM.
P.S. It's 2k3, not 23k unless there's an operating system called Windows 23000 hahaha.

 

Never saw a Consumer/Home version of Windows 2003, only the Server but then that could run as a Home version, still have a copy of it also. I'm kinda a software junky, just don't through it out. Biggest issue with I've found with the really old OSes such as WinNT 4 and Win2000 or consumer versions Win95 through WinME is trying to get drivers for the latest motherboards.

 

That's why we have VMs. No matter what OS you're running or how old it is, there's no need for the latest drivers etc because all that stuff is provided for you through virtualisation technology. All you really need is a good piece of virtualisation software.

I'm pretty sure you can run Win 2003 regardless of whether you're a home consumer or not. I've never tried Windows Server 2003 before, so I wouldn't know.

I ran it as a VM for Donkeys years as I needed a SAP GUI and Test system -- this wouldn't even run on W7 - never mind W8 / W10.

@jimbo45 As we speak, I am downloading a copy of 2k3 and I'm gunna try to install it on a VM. However I'm not giving up on 2k. Not yet, at least. Would you like me to post the link to download the 2k VM?

Now I've got a problem with my newly created 2K3 VM. The system isn't booting properly. A strange, bios-like beeping sound is heard when trying to type or press a key on the keyboard.

Breakthrough! I installed Firefox 5.0 on the VM and found that I was able to successfully access 5 websites. The million pound question now is if I can go online with Firefox, why can't I go online with anything else?
