Internet Explorer 11 won't launch after Sept 13, 2017 Windows update

Interestingly the cumulative one is not in my list of updates ... I have 3 updates only from Microsoft Windows:

Yes it is. You at looking at Control Panel's 'uninstall updates' page whereas I copied the name from the Settings Update history page. Look at the KB numbers, Control Panel just shows it as a 'Security Update for Microsoft Windows' but it clearly shows that you have had KB4038788.

Ah, I see. However that was installed on June 14th whereas the problem only started a couple of days ago, so it seems to be unrelated?

BTW now that I'm looking at updates, anyone have an idea why I would have 55 updates for "Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010" , I don't even have Office 2010 installed.....? Odd.

I have the same problem on Windows 7.

What I found out is that it has to do with the new layout of Internet Explorer.
When I have the tabs showing on a seperate row, IE wob't start.
Obviously you cannot change this setting, since you cannot get into the IE menu if it doesn't start....
So I have changed it using the registry. (run regedit)

*Arrow Hide or Show Search Box in Internet Explorer 11 Windows 10 Browsers Email Tutorials

    Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MINIE
Than change the setting for "ShowTabsBelowAddressBar" into 0
After this, you have to restart your computer first.

By the way, uninstalling the september update made IE11 also start again.
So if you don't like to change registry settings, you could uninstall the update, than change the tabs view settings in IE, and install the update again.

I do not know which is the relevant update for windows 10, so you might want to remove all the september updates.
Changing the registry is a lot easier anyway....

Internet Explorer 11 won't launch after Sept 13, 2017 Windows update

You could just try going to Turn Windows features on and off in Control Panel unselect IE11 reboot, then reselect it, reboot again.

  5. Hello

I am new to this group so please bear with me.

I tried all the solutions mentioned here so far ( uninstalled the update IE Worked - reinstalled update IE11 stopped working. Uninstalled IE 11 completely and then reinstalled it - would not open. Did a system restore. Tried SFC /Scannow and so forth.

I found that when I rebooted into safe mode with networking ( like suggested in the link given by Torre) my internet explorer 11 worked.

I then rebooted normal and IE 11 worked but noticed my icon and icon font size were tiny.

I had used Winaero Tweaker to increase the font size before the update with no issues before so used it again to set my icon font size up to 14 from 9.
I found IE 11 would not open again.

So after some playing around with the Winaero Tweaker I found I could only put the font size up to 11 from 9 and IE 11 would open. Any higher than 11 and IE stopped working.

I had to set the text size in start/settings/display then custom scaling to 200 percent to make the icons of my desktop look okay (any lower and IE11 would not open).

I have a desktop computer running windows 10 creator Pro. and use my tv as a monitor. display setting 1920 x 1080.

So if you use Winaero Tweaker you might find you will have to leave the icon font size wetween 9 and 11 plus play with the custom scaling in the display settings.

Not sure if this will help others but please let me know

    Cheers

Thanks! I copied the theme setting from one computer (on which IE was working) to the other, and now it's working as well.
So it has to do with the font settings, display settings etc.
That makes sense. I use a lot of settings that are not quite normal, because my eyesight isn't really good.
Now I just have to find out exactly what is the setting that causes the problem.
But so far, so good. You have put me on the right track there. Thanks a lot.

BTW. I didn't need to go into safe mode. I just copied the theme settings from the other machine.

  7. Glad to have pointed you in the right direction.

It was only when I went to safe mode and back to normal that I realized the fonts had changed and that is what put me on track of looking at the display settings and font settings.

Could you tell me how you copied the theme settings?

    Cheers

Internet Explorer 11 won't launch after Sept 13, 2017 Windows update

I now restored my original settings, and the only thing I had to do to get IE starting again was to change Icon fonts from 17 to 18.
Who would have thought that? Thanks again!
But I still cannot change the tab settings into "showing on a seperate row". That doesn't bother me at all.
    So: Problem solved!

*Arrow Hide or Show Search Box in Internet Explorer 11 Windows 10 Browsers Email Tutorials

Now, about copying the theme settings:

What I do is exporting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop into a reg file. (Using regedit) This reg file is useful to have when you mess up settings anyway....

I saw the link that was put into my post about changing tab settings and search box.
    What I meant is:
I can change the settings, but then IE doesn't start.
In other words: IE only works if the tab settings are NOT set to be on a seperate row.
So following the instructions of this link will break IE again!

Apparently IE only breaks after this update if it was set to have tabs on a separate row before the update. You could uninstall the update, set IE to have tabs and the address bar on a single row, then reapply the update.

After the update IE should open, but now have the tabs on a separate row again. My IE was using a single row before the update and worked fine after the update, but I did have to switch it back to a single row as I had it before the update.

I think you are right. That's why most people are not affected by this.
But you do not have to uninstall the update to be able to change the settings.
You can change the tab settings in the registry as well:

*Arrow Hide or Show Search Box in Internet Explorer 11 Windows 10 Browsers Email Tutorials

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MINIE
    ShowTabsBelowAddressBar = 0

You can do this after installing the update as well. (Probably have to restart afterwards)

I may have misunderstood, but didn't you say in post #22 that even with the registry fix you couldn't switch it back without breaking IE? I can switch between one or two rows without problems, but then being on one row before the update my IE wasn't broken by it.

Internet Explorer 11 won't launch after Sept 13, 2017 Windows update

If I switch back now to "seperate row view" IE still doesn't start. Just tried it again.
So if I should accidentally change the setting withing IE's menu, I have to use regedit to change it back again.
I cannot use the "seperate row view" at all. Doesn't bother me though.

But now that I think about it: On my second machine I had already changed the setting to "one row" before updating.
Still got broken. So maybe you're not right after all Internet Explorer 11 won't launch after Sept 13, 2017 Windows update :)
Confusing update this month, on that we can agree!
