Windows 10: Internet keeps dropping

Hi everyone, I have been trying to solve this issue for ages and have tried everything I could find online, including many posts on these forums.


My wifi connection keeps dropping out. Sometimes it's clearly a broken connection to the router i.e. the icon turns to no internet connection, laptop is not connected to the router at all, but most of the time I'll be trying to load a website or playing a song on Spotify, and it'll take ages -- when I look at the "status" page on the network settings window, I'll see that my connection to the router is problematic. I usually try the network troubleshooter, which usually says it either 1 can't figure out what's wrong, or 2 the connection fixes itself by the time the troubleshooter can figure things out so it asks me what the problem is. But every once in a while it'll fix things: it used to be the "default gateway unavailable" issue that came up, now it's that the IP configuration is wrong accompanied by my router not having connection to the internet.


Now we've called our internet provider many times, got our internet dish mounted in a better spot, replaced the wifi extender with a second router, and so on, since internet seemed to be broken on phones as well during these small spells. However I've compared this laptop with another, and this one loses internet much much more often. So, I've tried things like ipconfig /release + /renew, manually setting the IPv4 DNS servers, and netsh winsock reset commands a whole bunch and restarted my computer.


I'm lost trying to figure out what's going on! If I knew where to look to find some error code to google, I'd do that, but I can't figure out how to even start with something like this. I also don't want to call the internet provider again without making sure it's not my laptop. Please help!

Hello, are you always connected to the same router - or are you skipping to others? Suggest disabling these settings:




Also check your channel is not congested, and signal strength is adequate. There are freeware tools which can show you this information.

You might have to change band (frequency) - and in one scenario where someone was renting a place it was suggested the owner was restricting Wifi bandwidth...!

I'm sure others more experienced in these issues will comment.

I suggest you connect your laptop to the router with a ethernet cable. If the wired connection is stable you know that there is nothing wrong with the internet connection itself and with your LAN. Next step would be to go to the website of your laptop manufacturer and look for the latest WLAN drivers. Install them and test whether it improves the reliability of your WLAN connection. Then post back the results.

 

Internet connection dropping

I had already tried this and it did not work. I did find an updated driver for my adapter (Realtek) and so far no more problems. Thanks for the suggestion!
