  1. Is it necessary to delete all partitions to recover Windows 10?

So I just got my new Acer laptop back from the service center.

I installed Bluestacks yesterday, rebooted, and Windows refused to boot. So I took it to the service center.

The guy at the counter said he'll have to reinstall Windows and my files will be deleted. I thought ok, all my important files are on the other partition (I have 2 partitions on this laptop). And they were going to charge me MYR100++ to backup my files.

Today I get it back and realize they deleted both partitions.

I call them up and ask why? Was it necessary? The guy on the phone says that the whole process is automated, they just run some software to reinstall everything. Hurm... why did I send my laptop to them then?

Soooooo... I'm wondering, is it necessary to delete all partitions to reinstall Windows 10? Right now I really feel like the 1st thing I should have done is ask for help here instead of taking it to the service center. Back in Windows XP and Windows 7 I could easily reinstall Windows by deleting only the partition with Windows on it.

I know I should have created a recovery drive earlier but this laptop is super new and I was busy.

And haha, guess what? I ran my motorcycle over a deep pothole and damaged the rear suspension so my motorcycle was in the workshop yesterday. So I had to use Uber to get to the service center and come back home which was super expensive compared to using my motorcycle.

    Sigh.

    :)

No, you do not have to delete all partitions, you simply reinstall 10 right where it was.

Yep, you could have easily reinstalled 10 yourself.

Why didn`t you tell them not to wipe out your data partition ?

At least then they would have told you their procedure and you could have said "Thanks but no thanks"

You should learn how to create disk images *Smile

We can provide you with a lot more options of ways of doing things than a factory service center can. And we can show you how to do it for free most of the time. Hard lesson learned and we're sorry for your loss.

  7. Yeah I totally forgot I had a W10 Anniversary DVD that I could have used. A lot of stress lately. Just moved to a new room, then my motorcycle got damaged (my only vehicle), then my laptop gets corrupted and now I have a possibly serious health issue. Sigh.

My immediate thought was, I had to get this fixed immediately otherwise I won't have a pc to use. So I call them up and they said send it to the service center.

I thought they were professional. Guess not. Gonna complain in the Acer forums or something.

At least my W10 AE DVD could be used to upgrade my newly wiped laptop. And it seems that Recuva is able to recover some files. Fingers crossed, it's running as I type this.

So... How do I install Bluestacks properly? I suspect it's the problem because immediately after I installed it and rebooted, I couldn't boot Windows.

Or should I start another thread about installing Bluestacks?

Commiserations... sht happens unfortunately - it's usually temporary depending on your resolve. *Smile

... anyhow, yes hindsight is 20/20 and we would have provided better help. OEM's typically restore an RMA to factory settings which will entail removing all your stuff...

See tutorial section on Macrium backup's - it's important to prevent data loss due to a variety of reasons.. h/w breaks, ransomware.. .taking your PC to an OEM.. etc

  10. Thank you and thank you. *Smile

I guess this isn't the right forum to discuss Bluestacks? I'm a Windows Mobile fan but I need to use some apps sometimes... Which doesn't really justify switching to Android. Which is why I want to emulate it.

And.. it seems Recuva could only recover some of the files marked as "Excellent." I'm faced with a dilemma that I don't have another hard disk to recover those files to so I'm recovering them to the same drive which Recuva has warned me will lower the success rate. Hmm...

Run Bluestacks in a VM for your Android apps...I personally can't vouch for any of the recovery apps (like Recuva).., others may have had better luck.
