I have a windows 10 laptop, and I'm working on building a new pc. I wanted to know if I would have to pay for windows 10 for the pc, or if I could just use my laptop to make a usb drive that can install windows on it without the "activate windows" watermark.

  2. Help, cant create windows image

    Hello there, @fullinfusion!

It seems like some sort of an OS confusion has happened with your secondary WD Black and I'm sorry to hear about that. *Frown Is it possible to get windows on my pc by using a boot drive created from my laptop? :(
Maybe re-formatting it would help indeed as the community already mentioned. I'd suggest to take a look at this step-by-step how to partition and format an HDD: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PYCoid
Keep in mind that this will wipe clean the drive, so you should backup all important data from the drive somewhere else.
I noticed from the screenshots that your HDD appears as Disk 0, this means that it's plugged in the primary SATA port where the SSD (as an OS drive) should be. Actually it is possible that because of this Windows cannot create the image there. Swap the ports of the SSD and the HDD, this might help as well.

Keep me posted. Hope this helped! *Smile Is it possible to get windows on my pc by using a boot drive created from my laptop? :)

  3. Windows 10 Recovery drive error - Can't create a recovery drive on this PC

I inserted a new USB drive into my laptop, started drive recovery and after a
while it found the drive. However, on proceeding with the process I was then getting the error message “We can’t create a recovery drive on this PC”.

The steps I took to resolved this were:

    • Create a new partition on the USB drive.
    • Reformat the USB drive as NTFS
    • Make it bootable
    • Re-run the Windows 10 Create Recovery Drive utility

I am not sure that steps 2 & 3 are required as the utility will reformat the drive anyway but I haven’t tested this process omitting them.

Detailed instructions are as follows (thanks to
    www.indestructables.com
for pointing me in the right direction here)

    • Insert your USB flash drive to your running computer. As the first step, we need to run Command Prompt as administrator. To do this, we need to find cmd by typing 'cmd' in the search box on Windows Start Menu. After search result for 'cmd' appears,
right click on it and select "Run as administrator".
    • Type 'diskpart' on Command Prompt (without quotes) and hit Enter. Wait for a while until the DISKPART program run.
    • Type 'list disk' to view active disks on your computer and hit Enter. There would be seen that the active disks shown as Disk 0 for hard drive and Disk 1 for your USB flashdrive with its total capacity.
    • Type 'select disk 1' to determine that disk 1 would be processed in the next step then hit Enter.
    • Type 'clean' and hit Enter to remove all of data in the drive.
    • Type 'create partition primary' and hit Enter. Creating a primary partition and further recognized by Windows as 'partition 1'.
    • Type 'select partition 1' an hit Enter. Choosing the 'partition 1' for setting up it as an active partition.
    • Type 'active' and hit Enter. Activating current partition.
    • Type 'format fs=ntfs quick' and hit Enter. Formatting current partition as NTFS file system quickly.
    • Type 'exit' and hit Enter. Leaving DISKPART program but don't close the Command Prompt.
    • Type 'bootsect /nt60 d:' and hit Enter. Creating boot sector on D: drive (USB flash drive)

  4. Is it possible to get windows on my pc by using a boot drive created from my laptop?

Windows 7 booting off wrong drive?!?!?

Please move if this is in the wrong place.

I have two hard drives, a 1.5TB drive, and a 160GB drive. Windows is installed on the 1.5TB drive, as are all my files and programs. The 160GB drive has a bunch of old files, and apparently the bootmgr and boot folder. Nothing else is on the 160GB drive, other than media files etc.

If I remove the 160GB drive from the machine, windows refuses to boot, plug it back in, it works fine. The setup with two hard drives I have now is temporary, as the 160GB drive will go into another machine.

My question is, can someone give me a step by step on how to make windows force to boot off the 1.5TB drive, ignoring the 160GB drive in the boot process completely?
I don't know how to do this in Windows 7, on XP I would just run the /fixmbr command and its related ones.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I would really really rather not have to wipe and reinstall, I know it can be done without one as I've had this issue with XP before.
