    Is it possible to have nVIDIA Optimus in a desktop?


    Hi, I have an msi Z390 motherboard and an i5-9600K, with the integrated iGPU Intel UHD 630. I am going to buy a GTX 2060, but it consumes way more power than the Intel iGPU, even for idling/browsing.

    I've had notebooks in the past and there was this thing called "nVIDIA Optimus" which basically let you chose which GPU you wanted to use for a specific program/game/app. It was fantastic because you could set the Intel iGPU the standard, and for some specific apps and games you could set the nVIDIA to take control.

    Why would you want to choose the iGPU over the nVIDIA?
    Because the nVIDIA consumes WAAAAAY more power than the Intel, so you pay higher bills for no reason, extra heat for no reason, etc... So, I could save "a lot" of power if I can only turn the nVIDIA GPU when I want to: games, After Effects, Premiere Pro, etc...

    Any way to do it?

    No, not possible. Optimus is basically for Laptops with Optimus, where the extra Graphics chipset is on the MOBO and has the same Video output common to both video systems.
    It is a hardware difference.

    Some AIO types of PC do use what are essentially Laptop MOBOs.

    In a standard Desktop MOBO the video outputs are separate for the iGPU and the Graphics Card.
    There is no point in Optimus on a Desktop anyway.

    The iGPU maybe useful if your Graphics Card is removed for servicing or something like that.

    Is Optimus technology able to be done at desktop GPUs? ( to save 110W idle consumption?) (By some software or so..)

    I think it was Linus Sebastian (Linus Tech Tips) made a video about using a similar method to Optimus to run apps on the dedicated GPU but displayed through the CPU integrated graphics, it was done using old mining cards (Nvidia ones) that had no display outputs. So it is possible but the method used to successfully do it are a bit involved and probably are not worth the effort beyond experimenting.
