Windows 10: Is it possible to use HDMI for audio output only?

Hello, sorry, I don't know if this is a Windows driver question or graphic card related support.


I have a weird setup and it's the following:

I have a Laptop Dell G5 with RTX 2060 and I use the DVI port for a monitor. I have a samsung soundbar and I have it connected via HDMI.


The problem I have is that Windows recognize the HDMI output as another monitor and it assign a working space, and sometimes I accidentally scroll the mouse pointer toward that monitor position and my pointer disappears.


When using Remote desktop, I see the third "monitor" screen.


Is there a way I can set up the HDMI to send only audio and avoid assigning it as another monitor? The reason I want to use the HDMI is because I want the best sound from my laptop and it seems this way it does send a 5.1 signal to the soundbar.

Is it possible to play sound through headphones and HDMI output simultaneously?

Hi David,

I would like to inform that it is not possible to output sound through both the HDMI and the headphone jack simultaneously.

But you can watch video through HDMI and listen via headphone jack.

Follow the steps below.

• Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar
• Left click playback devices
• Right click HDMI
• Select Disable.

no audio in Hdmi output

It seems that the issue is due to incorrect audio settings. For help fixing audio or sound problems, try the audio troubleshooter.
It might be able to fix audio problems automatically.

Additionally, we suggest that check your audio settings. Make sure that your HDMI TV is set as your default sound device. Here are the steps:

• Click Start and in the Search box, type
  Sound.
• From the search results, click the Sound option.
• Under the Playback tab, click Speakers
• Click Set Default at the bottom.
• Click Apply and OK to save the settings.
