Is it "safe" to end COM Surrogate from Task Manager?

Since some recent update, when I browse photos and than, when I want to delete them, I am not able to do so because file is still opened in "com surrogate". Sometimes it is needed to wait just few seconds, sometimes minutes, sometimes even dozens of minutes before com surrogate stops "using" file and I am able to delete it.So, question from title. If I click on com surrogate in task manager and do "End task" option, will it restart/shut down my entire system or it will just "reset" itself like windows explorer, for example?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Task Manager "End Task" does not end task.

    Hi Glenn,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

    1) Does it show any error message while performing End Task Through
    Task Manager?

I suggest you to perform Safe Mode with Networking and then try to end the task and check if you’re able to

    Safe mode:

    Please follow below steps:

    • Click on power button at left bottom corner, press and hold
Shift key and click on Restart.
    • Click on Troubleshoot.
    • Click on Advanced options.
    • Click on Startup Settings.
    • Click on Restart.
    • When your PC starts up, you'll see a light blue screen with the Startup Settings menu. You can now choose an option using your keyboard (number keys or function keys). To start up in Safe Mode, press
4 or F4. To start up in Safe Mode with networking, press
5 or F5. To start up in Safe Mode with the Command Prompt, press
6 or F6. If you change your mind and decide you don't want to boot into Safe Mode after all, hit
      Enter to boot normally.
Let us know the status of the issue.

    Thanks.

The action cant be completed because the file is open in COM surrogate

You have opened or used other programs while tryied to make this change in the properties. To fix this problem, I suggest you close COM Surrogate by using Task Manager

    1. press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys simultaneously.
    2. Locate the COM Surrogate process then right click it.
    3. Locate End Task.
Note: If you can’t locate COM Surrogate process, switch to Details tab and find dllhost.exe. Then End Task.it
