  1. Is my sequence correct for Booting from Macrium Reflect and Restoring

I have a Macrium Reflect image of my current Win 10 machine on an external HDD. I have a new custom build. I just want to make sure I do things in the correct sequence.

Use the USB flash drive I made to boot a new machine.
Then navigate to the external HDD and open the Macrium Reflect image and click Restore.

Am I missing a step or procedure?

Also, I plan to give my current machine to my grandson, but I'm wondering about the license key for the Win 10, since I plan to load the same one I have now with the restoration process. Do I need to buy a new license for my old machine, or will the Win 10 still work?

    Thanks for the help,

    TRS

    :)

Restoring Windows 10 Image using Macrium Reflect

In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.
    1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
    2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
    3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination

    4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
    5. Boot up with your new HD.

Loading an image (Macrium Reflect) of my C drive into a brand-new pc to retain browser settings, etc.

Thanks for the reply Gordon. So, connect the external HD that has the image, to the new pc, boot it up, and then run the 'restore' function of Macrium Reflect, for that particular image, is that correct?

    Windows Boot Sector corrupted

Does your HDD installation still work? If so then this would be the correct procedure to follow:

    • Use Macrium Reflect (or a similar tool) to create an image of your installation.
    • Disconnect the HDD, connect the SSD.
    • Boot the machine with the Macrium Reflect bootable rescue flash disk.
    • Restore the image to the SSD.
In general: When restoring images you must make sure at the first reboot to connect the new disk only. If both disks are connected then you risk ruining both installations.
