Well, drat! I was hoping you'd missed what TC (Tomcat) said to do.

You can bet your sweet bippies that she knew exactly what Viewpoint is! If nothing else, this confirms to me that Viewpoint is nothing but spyware; AOL needs it to run so they can know exactly what you're doing when you're online.

As has been in the news lately, Congress has decided it's legal for your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to gather personal information about you and your online habits and sell it to the highest bidder. In other words, we are no longer guaranteed privacy. Therefore, it's in AOL's best interests to fool you into keeping Viewpoint installed. That's why she flat out lied to you.

I'm leery of having McAfee installed on your computer; especially since she downloaded and installed it for you. It's probably a trial version, or a version that AOL can charge you for.

ADWCleaner most likely did remove Viewpoint; however, the next time you open AOL, it sees that Viewpoint is missing and puts it right back on your computer! It needs to be there so AOL can continue spying on you.

Oh, believe me, they've figured it out . . . they've figured out how to overrule the one thing that worked so far!

I know you like the convenience of AOL; however, since it's perfectly legal for AOL to sell our information, I would opt for the safety of my privacy, rather than convenience.

  7. Wynona I will delete McAfee.

Every nano byte of AOL will be eradicated as well!!!! Not soon enough for me.

Not till I get everything set up on Chrome.

Yeah, get everything set up and working the way you want before you get rid of AOL.

Also, be sure to read the requirements for closing your account. It could be that you will have to make a phone call, or write a letter, fill out a form or something similar that you aren't expecting. Also, be sure to inform Paypal and your bank that the account is being closed so they can't reach out and grab any of your money.

Better advise her to get this and run it after she uninstalls McAffee. The McAffee Removal Tool. The regular uninstall will not get all the bits and pieces.

Get it from Major Geeks and DL from Major geeks site, not McAffee....

Download McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool - MajorGeeks

  10. Once again, I've learned something from you good folks. I no longer have any left-over traces of McAfee now. And I thought it was all gone!

  11. tomcat I hear you and Wynona. Lots to do. But it will be worth it when I don't have to see that irritating screenshot flash. I dread notifying paypal, all the sites I buy from, my credit card companies etc. But it's necessary....

  12. That process will be easier than you're dreading. And you will feel so much better when this is all behind you.

    Good luck there.

    Eileen,
I just switched someone from Yahoo to gmail recently.

When I opened a new gmail account for her, Google offered to import all her yahoo mail and her contacts, automatically, (up to that point), using a 3-party service to do it. I was astonished, but really happy to see this, as it made the migration a whole lot easier. (The only thing that was left to do was the favorites/bookmarks.) It migrated everything - her contacts, and all her emails, including all her saved folders with old emails in them.

I also elected to leave her old Yahoo account alive for a while. I'm glad we did that, as she had trouble logging into her MS account yesterday, and the recovery email was her yahoo address. If we had closed that Yahoo account, it would have been a nightmare trying to recover her MS account. Since she's had this yahoo account for decades, I am thinking this is not the last time we'll need it, so we're leaving it open, but not using it at all, (unless we need to recover an account like we just did).

She no longer uses the special ATT/Yahoo mail browser (similar to AOL), but she is able to access her yahoo account using her current FireFox browser, and everything works well.

    Just a thought.

I did a similar thing with my wife's Yahoo account. They (Yahoo) went away screaming and kicking, but eventually went away! That would be very convenient if Gmail would offer import from AOL.
