Windows 10: Is the media creation tool the same as an ISO file

I'm having problems upgrading a win 8.1 laptop to win 10. I've tried doing it directly via the site and I have also tried using a USB installation media creation tool to no avail so I though I would try this ISO thing but it looks like the same thing as the usb media creation tool, or is it?

Creating ISO file via Media creation tool fails

I've downloaded the media creation tool and chosen the option to create media for another PC. When it actually gets to the step of creating the media it is failing w/a "Something happened" error. I've tried it twice and it's aborted like this both times.
Any help in creating (or direct links to the .iso file) is greatly appreciated.

• From which version of Windows are you trying to upgrade to Windows 10?
• What is the make and model of your computer?
• Does the computer meets the minimum system requirement to upgrade to Windows 10?
• When exactly do you get the purple windows icon?

I suggest you to create another USB bootable media using the ISO and then try to upgrade to Windows 10. Refer to the following links:
