  1. Is there a site or place where i can see how common various windows registry entries are?

First off, i'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this question, if you think there's a better place to post this, let me know.

When I search for weird looking process and file names on google it usually tells me what it is and what function it fills, is there an equivalent site or way with registry entries? Because i see this weird key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT called "ratfile", wonderful name. It also exists in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes and even more hillariously has it's value set to "%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe" "%SystemRoot%\System32\msrating.dll",ClickedOnRAT %1

from my understanding this is just telling windows what filetype it is and what program to open it with as there are other keys ending in "(xxx)file" with similar key structures.

When i find weird-looking keys and entries like this, how do i go about finding out what it is and what it does, or how common it is, or any info about it at all? Google doesn't give me a lot of info on this particular registry key.

    • Open the Windows Start Screen or
Start Menu and type cmd in the search box.

    • Right-click Command Prompt or
cmd in the search results and select Run as Administrator.

Enter. Wait for Windows to finish resetting your Winsock configuration.
