Is there any way to force more resources to an app?

I have a new backup drive (WD MyCloud) and new software to backup a large amount of data (1.5TB). the process is progressing extremely slow (only about 20 GB/day).

When I look at task manager I see that little or no GPU and only 14% of memory being used.

Is there some way to configure things so that more resources are forced to the app that needs a boost??

    Thanks.

    :)

Is there a way to force an update check on the phone?

    Hi SEKKDS,

Thank you for your forum contribution.

There is no official way to force an update check for your phone. However, you will get the update though, it might just take a bit longer. What might have happened is, that by hardresetting your phone you might have been pushed back in the "update queue"
as the Mango update is realeased in several waves.

You should get the message again. Just try to check for new updates on your zune software on a daily basis.

    Regards,

    Marc A.

Is there a way to force an update check on the phone?

Hello. I have an HTC Arrive, on Sprint. Here are the facts, and only the facts.

    1. On the 27th, I did get the pop-up notice on my phone that an update was available. I repeat, I did indeed got the pop-up notice for the Mango update.

    2. Next, I opted to hard-reset my phone (I know, was not necessary to do this, but I did).

    3. Ever since, the update notice has not come back up on my phone. Even through Zune, it says I have no update available.

    Now my questions:

Was there some sort of "window of opportunity-only" to get Mango, and now I have missed it? As in, I won't be able to get Mango until some other cycle of time... much later on??

Alternatively, is there a way to force an update check from the phone, and have the update notice come back up? From just the phone itself, I see no way of knowing at all when the phone has checked for an update or not.

Thank you in advance for any answers that can be provided to me. I sit here saddened knowing I didn't catch my Mango when it was thrown at me, only to wait for another one to be chucked.

    Until then..........

Is there any way to force more resources to an app?

You can try if this helps:

In Task Manager, select the Details tab, right click the process you want give higher priority, select Set priority, select High:

Warning Avoid using Realtime priority, this might cripple your system as all resources will be given to process. Also notice that priority settings are valid only as long as the process is running; when killed / closed and run again, the priority defaults to Normal.

If what @Kari suggested does not work, look in the backup software settings. Some software have settings that by default are set to not bog the computer down (use less resources). They are adjustable and can be set to use more resources.

    @Kari

Great! Thanks. I hope this works. The priority of some of the process that I think are operating the backup were originally "Low".

What is "Realtime Priority"? I'd like to avoid that as you warn. I did get a message while resetting priority "Changing the priority of certain processes may cause system instability"

The Real time priority gives all possible hardware resources to specified process. It practically in some cases brings your computer to halt because a process is demanding all resources, leaving almost nothing to other system processes.

In my personal and subjective opinion the Real time priority should be removed, not even possible for a user to select.

    In general, no.

Increasing the process priority would only help in specific situations. It would help if the process was CPU bound AND there were other CPU bound processes running. In this case it appears that neither is true.

A CPU bound process could saturate the usage of the CPU cores it was using, even if it's priority was very low. A non CPU bound process would use very little CPU time even if it has real time priority. I have tried both experimentally. This is more complex than is apparent and I will not try to explain it here.

Setting real time priority on a CPU bound process is dangerous because there are critical system threads that run at lower priority and they could be starved of CPU time. The results of that are unpredictable. Even a process that is not normally CPU bound can become so at times with similar risks. Real Time priority is best left to those who fully understand how it works. Unfortunately much that has been written about it is wrong.

Thanks to you both. I'll stay away from Realtime priority.

I interpret what is written in this thread is that there is no way to force more resources into a piece of software. Maybe the amount of resources is a function of how the software is programmed? What I'm looking for is some way to make the backup software run faster. When I saw the meager resources that it consumes and the quantity of resources available, I assumed that better speed is available.

So I need to live with the poor performance WRT speed?

A basic principle in improving the performance of anything, not just computers, is to identify the bottleneck, that component that is the major contributor to the poor performance. This is important. Get this wrong and you can expend much time, energy, and money for very little gain. Unfortunately this often happens.

In this case it seems quite clear that the problem is NOT CPU related. An application will take whatever CPU time is necessary to get the job done. The fact that CPU usage is low is a clear indicator that it isn't working very hard - because there isn't much for it to do. Even if you had some hypothetical CPU that was 1000 times faster, and the process was running at Real Time priority, you probably wouldn't notice the difference. For a backup program this isn't surprising. Even heavy disk usage that fully occupies the drive doesn't require much work by the CPU.

Memory usage is low so that doesn't seem a likely cause either.

The performance of a backup program is primarily dependent on disk speed. I would suspect that the problem is disk related. Whether or not it is a disk drive is at present impossible to tell.

What are you backing up to and is the device known to be good?
