Windows 10: Is this for real??

I was playing around with another OS (Linux Mint) and Googled something to do with cloning with Macrium and saw this

so if what is said about ALL users in the first paragraph going to be the case?? If so just what sort of charge is going to be levied??

Can't delete a video file from my foldier

I've searched up videos on how to delete files through the command prompt but each time it says something like "the directory is invalid" or something between those lines. Whenever I try to mess around with the file, the COM Surrogate in the task manager
locks on using over 20% of my cpu and all my files wont even display an image or icon, just the name. I would really like to remove this video file so any help would be appreciated.

The file is a .vlc file that I got by recording a minute section of a movie I own but the file was extended to over 19 hours (even though the recorded clip is just under a minute). I can't move or rename it either.

Until he produces citations I think we can dismiss it. There has been no rumours to this. (Also anyone can claim they have a PhD on the internet)

Those sorts of rumours have been going around ever since Windows 7 was in pre-release (beta) stage - so this is simply a rehash of the old argument.

In any case if you need to image Linux stuff there's a whole slew of readily available stuff out there -- for example rsync (or gui version grsync), clonezilla, filezilla, the good old "DD" command etc etc. Anybody with a bit of linux skill can create a bootable "live" distro which can then be used to copy / restore stuff - although Macrium would be great if it did do a bootable Linux version. (Note Linux kernels these days handle read / write on Windows NTFS file systems so a live bootable distro with GRSYNC installed is a great way of handling individual file / directory backups / restores too -.

Here's grsync - really useful program --- agree the interface looks a bit ugly but who cares - does its job brilliantly













Ms will make enough on service contracts, Xbox stuff including VR (Virtual Reality), AI (actually Ms is very big in Robotics these days) and of course Office - probably outselling Windows these days -- almost every client I've worked with uses Ms Office in some form or other.

Ms also do a lot with SAP in supplying its SQL DB - so in reality Ms could actually GIVE AWAY windows 10 to consumers if it so wished with very little loss of revenue.

Just dismiss those ideas of W10 for home consumers being only available as paid subscriptions in future -- It's never going to happen.

From what I've read, Microsoft wants to offer more software as a subscription option, but it won't be the only option.
Like office is now, buy it as a full license or rent via office 365 subscription. Windows in Enterprise has been subscription since forever. The Enterprise Edition is only available via a Volume License Subscription. Pro can be VL, or full Retail or OEM license. The average Joe can't afford the current Volume License offering. Multi license etc. Talk is (rumor has it *Wink ) that may change and a cheaper option may be open to consumers. Some have been wanting that for a while. And Windows will have a subscription option, Windows 365, for lack of a better title. I doubt it will be called that, but you get the idea.


I've seen this many times, people see the "Software as a Service" put the blinders on, and start going on about how this will be the only option and that every install on the planet will be converted to pay as you go. Total exaggeration IMHO.

but remember with the PURCHASE version of Office you still always get the current updates.

Ms whatever model they offer will continue to give FREE updates to the software -- why wouldn't they as old software could get (probably would get) infected with all sorts of spy / ad / other malware so it's in Ms's interest to keep users software as up to date as possible.

One could argue that say instead of paying say 240 USD for Windows - you could "Lease" it at say 10 USD a month indefinitely -- IMO that's a perfectly viable option and I don't regard that as "subscription only" model.

Businesses on the other hand are paying a lot more than just purely for the software so it makes sense - especially since this type of leasing cost can be deducted from Business taxes in most jurisdictions.

@jimbo Yes you get updates for free with your full license. Until that version reaches end of support. Up until Windows 10, that was an issue. Windows 7 will eventually reach end of life and no longer get those updates. That means for most, buying another license for a newer version of Windows. Windows 10 changed all that as you just keep getting the next version/build for free (for that device). Just surmising, but a subscription to Windows will likely be for multiple licenses on any device you want up to the maximum your allowed. An "on up to X devices" deal and you can move them around easily as you buy new devices. There are some that would like that.

Yes, Enterprise is also paying for and getting Software Assurance.

GRSYNC runs on Linux --afraid no windows version

However you can create a bootable linux live distro (run from say a USB stick), install grsync on it and then you can use it for backing up Windows files / directories. You'll have to google for all the commands as this is a Windows Forum so I'm not teaching Linux here.

I was just pointing out to the OP that if you need a Linux based bootable recovery system you don't have to rely on Macrium making one.

I believe it can be ported to Windows but you'll probably have to compile it yourself. Not a task for the faint hearted I'd imagine.

Thanks for the replies but it was the fact that Office and Outlook is now accessed by annual payment now that got me thinking is ths real?? That is unless I have got that terribly wrong of course.

 

my opinion a TROLL trying to created confusion. the guy only has 27 post there.

Yep you may be right Whacker mate but I thought Office was by annual subs and the full Outlook app too - but I do stand to be corrected.
