Office is available under two purchase models at present, the conventional pay a lot at once and run it on your local system is Offfice 2016, there is also the version that is purchased on a lower annual payment which will recur until you cancel the contract, this system also is downloaded and runs locally but comes with additional cloud based options - this is Office 365.

The system to look at for the choice between subscription and full purchase options is that used by Adobe - for example I will use the photography package that I use - this costs $10 US per month so thats $120 US per year, or $360 US over the average three year life of a Photoshop version. So, if you are one of those who always run the latest Photoshop you are paying $360 US for photoshop against the last pre subscription model version Photoshop CS6 which retailed for excess of $800 US and you also get lightroom thrown in ,( $150 US every 2 years or so ). The other thing you get with the new model is continuous developments and upgrades - The new camera profiles used for lightroom and Camera Raw (for Photoshop) used to be released with the major new release of the products - they are now released as they are completed. Obviously there is a point where someone who keeps using the old software for long enough will break even and even start to save money.

The thing that the old system generated in the real world were huge quantities of pirate copies of Photoshop, which drove up the price of the software to those who used it legitimately

EXTREME over pricing ALONE drive piracy. i forget about the office 365 model, cause it's way too intrusive for my taste. but yes there is a yearly version.

  5. Agreed.
Also a significant proportion of the cost of products with DRM, is the cost of the developing/incorporating the DRM system.
    *Doh

Music Piracy forced the Corporations to slash the cost of music.

In Australia, before the "Piracy Era" a CD of 10 tracks cost ~$30, now the equivalent cost of a CD of 10 tracks cost is ~$10.

Even here on Ten Forums we have our share of members who repeatedly post completely false information as facts without any reference to sources. I detest this "it does not have to be true to be posted as a fact" mentality, people thinking they are so important that if they believe something it must be a fact.

The post on Macrium forums you linked to is a typical example of this. I can almost see how the thought process of that OP goes: "I think it's like this, therefore it must be a fact. Who cares about evidence, my word must be enough to convince others that I know what I am talking about".

    Total carbage, b***s***.

Your statement is not completely true. It is not a fact that Office and Outlook are now accessed by annual payment. Your comment indicates that it is the only option.

It's a choice users can make, buy a one time life long license for specific version of Office without upgrade option (Office 2016 at the moment), or buy a monthly or annual subscription which includes all future upgrades to always have latest version (Office 365).

Whats the difference between Office 365 and Office 2016?

I sent a Message to Macrium About this guy and for their take on it. His qualifications seem legit but that means nada.

I prefer the lease model. It is only marginally more expensive to get a 5 user licence EACH with 1 TB of onedrive space.

    Overall, package is great value.

Well I stand to be corrected then because I thought that one had to pay for the full Outlook as I use the free version and am always being asked if I want to upgrade and if that doesn't mean money then please tell me what it does mean - because I don't believe in free lunches and as for the Office well I have copies of 2007 and 2010 that I cannot use because after having a few clean installs and having to put Office back on I am refused to do so because I have used it too many times already - is that what you think is fair because I damn well don't all I wanted was to use it to do simple letters and documents and very infrequently at that. It really didn't matter to me if it wasn't supported anymore and heck what is it to Microsoft except that they would lose money from me having to shell out more money for the current version/s of Office.

I posted what I thought was a possibility and as usual have got slammed for doing so I didn't need the comments that were made about my post being in part quite rude.

    Hi there
    @ICIT2LOL

Take a breath and count up to 10 .

You've got a bit confused here.

Paying money does not mean that it has to be a subscription model only. Pretty well all commercial software has to be paid for and people don't usually complain - if the price is too high they look for something else or acquire stuff by "other means".

For some a subscription / lease model is fine - for others it's an abomination. Depends on the economics and the attitude of the purchaser.

Suffice to say getting back to the original point of the O.P : -- Currently there is NOTHING coming out of Ms to suggest that Windows will become a subscription only model for ALL users (Enterprise has been subscription for years but that's another issue). Ms MAY decide to introduce alternative licencing -- for example I'm quite sure a load of people on these Forums would like to see some form of limited multi-use licence for Home / Small business users - especially useful also if testing software on a load of VM's etc.

As far as OFFICE 2007 / 2010 is concerned you should be able to explain on the activation phone line that you've upgraded computers or whatever and I'm sure they will guide you through the process to re-activate them.

    Cheers

    just FYI
If you are interested in cloning/backup/restore in mint, the next release will have its own backup and restore tools (not to mean you can not use what is already there like rsync/grsync dd):

"Timeshift is an excellent tool which focuses on creating and restoring system snapshots. It’s a great companion to mintBackup which focuses on personal data.
The two applications will be installed by default and complement each others in Linux Mint 18.3."

    That simply is not true.

You'll get Windows 10 pre-installed when you buy a new computer, or you can buy it for your own build with $100. Compare that to games costing $40, $60 or even more; you'll get a full operating system with a price of two games.

Full Office 365 Personal suite can be subscribed with less than $6 a month ($69.99 a year), with less than $8.40 a month you can get Office 365 Home for five users ($99.99 a year). Each user gets 1 TB OneDrive storage, full set of Office desktop applications, free upgrades, one hour free monthly phone calls to any landline number in the whole world (mobile numbers in selected countries), and so on.

    That's dirt cheap.

  15. That post from The MR Forum is all BS. The OP's Opinion and nothing more. As @Kari pointed out, he has no sources and his post has no merit what so ever. Do not believe it.
