I rebooted today and now see Windows wants to install this update. A Google search doesn't turn up anything so I'm wondering if it's legit? "Quectel Incorporated - Ports - 12/8/2017 12:00:00 AM - 5.0.1.3"

I run Norton Security 24/7 and do various other scans with Malewarebytes and online scans with Eset and Trend Micro.

    Thanks!

    :)

Quectel makes cellular modems and GPS receivers. Have you checked Device Manager to see if you have any Quectel devices?

Yeah, I've checked. There's nothing there. I have no onboard wifi, nor gps. The only GPS that's ever been attached was a Garmin last hooked up over 6 months ago. The system has been rebooted numerous times since the 12/8/2017 time stamp.

There was a similar update that popped up up a couple weeks ago. Same thing where it needs to be installed manually, from the update page. This one was "Qualcomm Incorporated - Ports - 3/25/2016 12:00:00 AM - 2.1.2.2" I found a thread where someone said it was safe. Windows 10 - Qualcomm Incorporated Ports - Microsoft Community

  6. Did you ever plug in a USB cellular modem in the past? Check "Show hidden devices" in Device Manager to see if anything shows up.

Otherwise it's likely some bug in how Windows Update detects what devices you have.

Never. This system has been running since mid 2013 without reformatting. In fact, I've still got an old partition with an Windows 10 beta on it that I need to uninstall. This was a quad boot machine. Windows XP, Win7 and Win8 and Win 10 beta.) When 10 came out it wouldn't upgrade over 8 so I installed it over 7 and figured I would get around to wiping everything and doing a fresh install. I never got around to it. Still rock solid 99.9% of the time. (I work from home doing audio for radio so I'm on the computer literally for 8-12 hours a day, 5 days a week, since '04.)

Thinking back, last week I had to debrick an old ported HP Touchpad that I left sitting uncharged for too long. I'm wondering if it could be something from the software I had to download to do that?

In the end, I'll probably just let it do the install and see what happens. I'm pretty good about keeping the important stuff backed up offsite, so I can reformat, if need be. (I worked in IT back in the early 2000s but got away from the tech side to do the radio stuff.)

    Thanks for all the help!

You might want to run Uwe Sieber's excellent DeviceCleanup tool. It will go through your device collection and forcibly remove/uninstall everything that's not currently attached to (or present in) your PC. This is a good idea as a once-a-year cleanup activity anyway, and it sounds like it's been somewhat longer than that since you put the system together. My best guess/belief is that this will do away with your issue immediately.
You can use the tool to get rid of everything, or you can use it to selectively delete only stuff you know you'll never use again. It's a pretty nice piece of work. His other tools are good, too, so you may want to poke around there a bit.

I like this tool so much I've included it as part of the Admin Toolkit at Win10.guru. Read my blog post about it from yesterday afternoon, please: Toolkit Item: Device Cleanup Tool
