    Hey guys.

I've just checked the Event Viewer for "Defrag" event to see whether the recent "issue" exists in previous version of Windows 10 (1909).

Here is the album where it can be seen that both defrag and TRIM have been done to both SSD and HDD. The events are not shown in chronological order, but are highlighted so it can be determined which is which. This has been done automatically on schedule.

Windows 10 (1909) Event Viewer SSD and HDD Defrag & Trim (11.07.2020.)

Here is a picture of Event Viewer showing the Optimize function doing its thing on version 1909. (manually ran it - 20.07.2020.). Only TRIMed the SSD.

Here is a picture showing drives on the system. One SSD (partitions C and D), one HDD, one Portable Base Layer (used for Windows 10 Sandbox if I am not mistaken).

(Defrag error in the Event Viewer is not directly connected to the drives on the system - it's about the aforementioned Portable Base Layer)

I cannot seem to find accurate information regarding this "bug" in Windows 10, so it all boils down to rumours about harmful defrag processes on the system drives.

Has it been acknowledged by Microsoft as a problem or not?

On one hand, some people claim that everything is fine and that Windows is capable of differentiating SSDs and HDDs and, therefore, there is no need for concern whatsoever. It is also mentioned that defragging SSDs occasionally is fine.

On the other hand, there are articles showing Windows running actual defragmentation process on SSDs, which, as some claim, should not be done because of wear and tear of those devices. I've seen that in the article here (bleepingcomputer). Also, there is a picture from a reddit post that apparently shows the disk activity in Task Manager while TRIM and defrag are being run on an SSD.

I am not very well versed in Windows and OSes in general, but I would still like to know the truth if possible. I will have an SSD delivered tomorrow that I'll have to install to another machine together with Windows 10 version 2004 and it would be nice to know whether this "bug" can cause harm to the disk.

    Thank you for reading.

  2. WIndows suddenly started defragging my SSD instead of trimming it

I have been using my 850 evo SSD as system drive for 3 years and I have always left Windows to optimize the drives. It's recognized as an SSD and everythin worked fine. Until recently, I noticed the drive's activity light is on when idle. Then I open up
task manager and the default defrag app and wait. And it turns out Windows is indeed defragging my SSD as its current status shows "2% consolidated" instead of "X% trimmed" (and trimming usually takes only a few seconds). The SSD is nearly 100% active as well.
I disabled optimization for my SSDs and leave it on for HDDs only for now. Why did Windows all of a sudden decide to defrag my SSD? Again, the SSD is not being recognized as HDD and Windows used to trim the SSD noramlly. Is there a way to fix it? Windows version
    is 1903. Thanks.

  3. Defragment & SSD

    Hi.

    I have installed a Samsung SSD 850 Evo on a Windows 10 build 10.0.14393.

In the Defragment software, I saw "trimmed" instead of "defragmented".

What is trim? Is it necessary to run defragment on SSD?

Running defragment makes any problem to SSD or not?

    Thank you.
