Windows 10: Is Windows Defender good on Windows 10?

Discus and support Is Windows Defender good on Windows 10? in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; Why? For me it's the other way around. Same, used MSE in Win 7 but not for long and now use WD in Win 10 and defo keeping it *Smile Discussion in 'AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security' started by RubberDucky, Jul 10, 2016.

Defender is okay if you can't attain a proper paid anti-virus, basically it's better than nothing. It obviously doesn't do quite as well on testing, as the more well-known paid software products.

Please note that MBAM Free doesn't include real-time monitoring, nor does it update on its own. You'll have to manually update it and run your own scans.

  3. That is true and very important to point out.*Smile

    That is partially true.
It does not have scheduled, automatic updates (which is what I think you were referring to).*Wink
    However..... See below...

That is no longer true, since the release of version 2.x back in 2014.*Smile
When running a MANUAL scan under Free, Trial or Premium versions, MBAM will "automatically" check for updates before the scan, and it will update definitions (and, if configured to do so, program updates), as long as it can contact the update servers.
This change was implemented as default behavior with version 2.x, because many new/basic users of MBAM Free did not know to or bother to check for updates before scanning under version 1.x.
That led to a lot of support tickets for both false positives and false negatives.

{Trial and Premium versions can be configured to automatically and silently check for updates in the scheduler. They can also be configured to automatically check for updates before a scheduled scan. But even those versions will check for updates before a MANUAL scan, as well.)

    Cheers,
    MM

Moxiemomma is correct. I was referring to auto-updates, specifically.

MM - Are you just using Defender, of you do have a paid anti-virus sub? If so, what is your favorite one?

  5. Hi:

I finally just set up my new OEM Win10 box today.
Currently I'm running the OEM McAfee.
But, as a McAfee survivor from many years ago, I plan to ditch it ASAP in favor of KIS + MBAM Premium + MBAE Premium. I have been running that combo under Vista and several 7 boxes for years.
But this will be my first Win10 box.

I need to install some of my 3rd-party productivity and other software installed and take care of some other tweaks first.
Then, it will be "MCPR tool, here I come".*Wink

    Cheers,
    MM

KIS is pretty sweet, has top scores in independent testing, as I'm sure you know... but I uninstalled it because I think it's updating takes too long. Yeah I know, I'm overreacting but little things like that bug the heck outta me.

I have two other subs (Zone Alarm and McAfee) so went with one of those instead.

Man you just reminded me of something I went through back in 2010, when a bum McAfee update caused the vast majority of my XP network machines to start rebooting over and over again. That was not fun... I had to work several 16 hour days in a row because of it lol*cake

Thanks everyone. I decided to try Windows Defender + MBAM Pro + MBAE to see how it's going.

  9. I just bought a new ASUS, 15.6 Display, Intel i7, 3 days ago. I had Defender on and it did not catch 11 Pups that Free Malwarebyte picked up and disposed. Eight of the pups were from yahoo and the other 3 from Microsoft sites. I am going to run it this way for a week or so with Defender turned on.

I do have 3 subscriptions with Webroot and might transfer one of them over to this new ASUS, which is now my main computer. With With Webroot on the other PC's, it was fabulous. I'd run MWB every so often on the old main computer and found that Webroot took care of everything. I'd run MWB and nothing was left for it to do anything.

Just an interesting observation with just Defender. Anyway, I will keep Defender running on my new Main computer for a bit and see what Defender will or will not detect. I have a feeling, I will have to put Webroot on my new computer.

  10. I dont want to cause any flam but I just wonder why so many people trust defender. Even microsoft recommends 3rd party antivirus programs and was doing so proactively for a quite a long time - see here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...rs-for-windows

and besides that, if you compare defender with other antivirus program it is not really a great security product as it protects your PC only "offline" - when malicious files are executed.

Windows Defender has come A LONG WAY since its former MSE days. On w10 it's quite a capable AV and, it also protects you real-time and it even has got cloud support. I have tried myself a lot of different AV programs under W10 and I usually recommend sticking to WD + additional protection layers + a good dose of common sense. Your mileage may vary of course.

My experience using Defender has been nothing but positive. I haven't had my PC receive a virus in years. But I bet that's mostly due to the sites I browse and the software I use/install., No AV is perfect and the best one is still the one between your ears.

  13. Is Windows Defender good on Windows 10?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

To update: When I ran MB and WD, it was AFTER I updated the OS to 1607 and checked my Yahoo e mail and went to MS website that MB picked up on the 11 PUPs. Yesterday, after going to my yahoo email and MS website and running MB again, there were no pups detected. My new ASUS F556 is going into its 5 day of operation.

I will let Defender do its thing as stated before for a month or so and see if I have to renew Webroot for another year on the 3 pc's @$50 for all three. The other 2 pc's don't get used that much and Defender would probably be just fine.

Edited: bunny j: Thank you for your input!

  14. I wonder that too. In every test out there, WD always ends up as the last. Even in the test of weeks old malware, where AV vendors share their databases, every AV got 99,99%, but WD got only 99,00%, because as always, MS lacks in response time, which is crucial. No AV can detect everything, but with WD you can be 100% sure, that it will detect the least.

Where exactly, on that page are they "recommending" to use a third party product? They're just saying that if you are going to use a third party product, then you should choose a legitimate one (not a fake one) and give you the resources to identify good from bad.
