Windows 10: Is Windows Retail Version Upgrading to Win 10 OEM??

Discus and support Is Windows Retail Version Upgrading to Win 10 OEM?? in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; No. That statement is NOT made by Microsoft but by a community member. But the EULA referenced above is from Microsoft. Is that official enough? Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by WhyMe, Aug 7, 2015.

  2. Yes but that was with a unique product code that is easily traceable to a specific PC. That's not the case anymore with a free upgrade. In place hardware swaps that cause activation to fail may be easy to sort out the way you describe. Try moving your License to a completely new PC. Which is what most are saying they may want to do. Not so easy, I'm thinking.

I've upgraded both OEM and Retails and slmgr /dli shows every computer upgraded as RETAIL channel.

    You are correct, my mistake.

Is Windows Retail Version Upgrading to Win 10 OEM??

Having an option to purchase an upgrade pack after July 29 2016 for customers who originally bought a retail Win7 or Win8 license should be possible and easy to implement. The upgrade license pack could be sold either in a shop or online. Or maybe only available via the MS store. After all, they do hold a copy of my retail Win8 product ID on their servers and can validate the sale to prevent any potential misuse of the license.

I would pay for that as it would cost less than a full Win10 license. That would mean I would not lose out from having paid the extra $s for the original retail license

  5. That will happen, may be before July 29th 2016 though. If your running XP or Vista your paying to upgrade, Microsoft isn't going to make you wait a year to do it. I expect upgrade versions to show up with full Retail Versions for purchase anytime now. If they aren't already out there. I haven't looked. I have an MSDN subscription so I don't need to buy Windows. I get 5 keys and only have 4 PC's. They all upgraded for free anyway so I haven't had to use any of my Windows 10 keys yet. Just for backup at this stage, incase one of my PC's fails activation for some reason.

In a command prompt, type winver. In the box that opens up, click on the Terms and Conditions Link. In the EULA that is displayed you will find:

Seems like a clear statement from Microsoft in their Terms and Agreement that states an OEM license stays an OEM license and a retail license stays a retail license.

That is part of the problem. I also have a number licenses (both OEM and retail).

When slmgr /dli shows my OEM as Retail I realise that is wrong and that the Microsoft servers are incorrectly identifying the product.

The Win10 version should be showing as OEM when an OEM has been upgraded, with no option of transfer, tied to the lifetime of the device.
Whilst on the flip side, the Retail Versions should upgrade to Retail Win10 and maintain the rights of transfer after 29 July 2016, to any device of my choosing. That is what is in the EULA.

If anyone still cares that you can't see the flags on mobile with Tapatalk, WhyMe has the UK/City of London flags. (I have USA/State of Ohio.)

And it says retail version for me, too...and I'm pretty sure this was an OEM install...it came with Vista long before I got it, and was upgraded to 7 Pro by the guy I got it from.

I'm also guessing that may be so. The thing is Microsoft spokespersons keep repeating their 'lifetime of the device' statements in reference to the current free upgrades without making any reference to any future upgrade paths for existing retail license holders.

Their staff don't know and often tell different customers different things about what the future holds. At the moment, it is all guesswork and no-one knows how their future financial model pertains to the new Microsoft Windows Service nor how it will impact customers.

    Also in the EULA:
Currently, Microsoft is telling people how to transfer their retail license to another computer - install the original OS that had the retail license, activate it, then upgrade it to Windows 10.

On July 29, 2016, they may specify a different method to do that. If they don't, then I guess you move to sections 11 and 12 of the EULA, since you don't live in the United States.

The point is that you are complaining about something that Microsoft might not do almost 1 year from now. It just seems like it is a bit too early to be complaining about something that may - or may not - occur one year in the future.

I have found they are being generous with Updates, I used the Pro version ISO file to create an install DVD and I updated a friends system, cos they did not want to wait a month for the installer to be delivered into their system. I was expecting to have to buy the Pro License, but instead, so my surprise, the system came up fully and permanently activated.

On the other hand, I did a fresh install on an empty HDD on my Windows 7 system, and I had to buy the Pro License. My Windows 7 is still eligible for the update, though, and that's an Ultimate Edition. I may still update that.
