Windows 10: ISO corruption , very annoying.

Discus and support ISO corruption , very annoying. in Windows 10 Installation and Upgrade to solve the problem; No sweat fred, even techies get frustrated by technology *Wink The trick is to always remember that we cannot let the machines win! ISO corruption , very annoying.

I already challenged my machine to an all out brawl to the death using prehistoric weaponry , it hasn't responded yet but one of us must die . Will update everyone unless machine wins of course.

When i refreshed Windows 10 it got to 99% refreshed but stopped at 99% and then developed into a nonstop loop that said no boot device detected. All signs of Win 10 were gone .

I had to use a Win 7 repair disk to boot and used a Win 7 image to get Win 7 back up and running . I then attempted to download Win 10 using the "media creation tool" .

I got a message saying (something went wrong) just as my Win 10 download was about to install (no joke) , that is all it said . It was a brand new download using the media creation tool , after i got that unhelpful message i didn't know what to do .

I saw that Windows update was again prompting me to install Win 10 again so thats what i am currently waiting on to finish , i will let you know how that goes , it's on 50%.

I already updated to Win 10 this way the first time but when i got back to Win 7 it's letting me do it again.

Good luck in battle ... machines are not very smart, I'm certain you will be victorious.

I hate that message! No kidding something went wrong - thanks Windows 10 for the detailed information *Tongue

I'll say this for you, you are a champion!
Just so I'm sure what path you're currently taking, you are doing the upgrade from the prompt - is that correct?

I'd still like to see the disk management screen I asked about in post # 43.

In addition, between frames (bowling reference) could you also post a screen shot of your C: drive?
    Before grabbing the screen,
    Navigate to C:
press the blue FILE menu on File Explorer
select Change folder and search options

ISO corruption , very annoying. [IMG]

    press the View tab
    select Show hidden files

ISO corruption , very annoying. [IMG]

press the [ OK ] button

Then grab the screen shot - I'm looking for any hidden folders that begin with $ or ~$

    Thanks

I was critically injured in battle , machine won but decided to spare my life , how thoughtful , was in the hospital in a full body cast so sorry for the late response , here's a pic .

Tell me about it, that has got to be the most useless message ever , very reassuring , what a joke.

I wondered how the battle was faring *Wink
Glad to hear you were spared and have recovered.

So where does the project stand now ... your here's a pic did not come through.

  5. Ya see, I try to make it easy by creating a custom MMC so that the pertinent information gets conveyed the first time ... does anyone listen ? Nope ... it's not just you fred, no one has used the MMC I offered *Sad

Anyway .. the information is in the Status column - close the 'wings' on Disk Management and drag the Status column wider to show the flags. Also make sure that the disk space and free space show. Use my Disk Management picture as an example (of course, you could always use the custom Disk Management console - it's was created with Windows MMC)

Did I ask you for a Specy report - did you post a link to the PUBLISHED snapshot?
IF you posted a link, let me know, I'll look for it

    other wise ...
Please follow this tutorial to provide the current operating environment of your machine.

The machines are probably cutting the lines of communication. We have to keep the supply lines open or the battle is lost.

I'll look at the new data I requested in post 48 when you post it.

  10. You say that's your thumb, huh?

post 52: Work on the other stuff? I think you gave me what I needed (Speccy and Disk Mgmnt) - I'll look at that in a bit.

Sorry for the delay, I was updating my test machine today - now I'm going to grab something to eat.

I know it's hard to see but there is definitely an attempt at giving the "thumbs up" in that pic just to let everyone know i am in good shape and very happy at the positive outcome of our "death brawl" .

Take your time my friend .

  12. Your drive has plenty of space - that's good.

Your machine does not have the System Reserve partition, but that really shouldn't cause this issue, at least I don't think it should. I know MS has been working in this area throughout the Preview so I could have outdated information (I hope that's not the case - there are many machines setup the same as yours).

The one attempt to upgrade got to 99% and 'hung' - is that correct.

The only thing I can think of trying is to manually create the System Reserve partition with the size Win10 wants. This take a bit of time and there is no are guarantee.

'm basing this on (post# 44 where you said
When i refreshed Windows 10 it got to 99% refreshed but stopped at 99% and then developed into a nonstop loop that said no boot device detected

You'll use a bootable Minitool Partition Wizard to
    shrink C: by 500 MB
    move C: to the right
create a 500 MB partition as the first partition on the drive (to the left of C*Smile
set the new partition as active
remove the active flag on C:

Once that's done, you'll need to move the boot information to the new partition.
The easiest way is to boot your Win7 repair disc and run repair three times (fixes the mbr, boot files, and bcd).

Test the changes - does the machine boot?

Then try the upgrade - launch setup on the install media from the running Windows.

I have some instructions, give me a little bit of time to find them and confirm that's what you need to do (too many partially complete instructions on my machine *Wink)

I'm wondering if the 2 MB of unallocated space on your drive is the real culprit. That would be a real shame if Windows saw that and thought it could use it - I don't know if that is the case though ... just a thought that occurred to me when I saw your disk schema.

I still have to look at your Speccy - there might be something there. I just wanted to let you know what I'm considering as of now.

Don't do anything mentioned in this post at this time. These are only an outline of tasks.
    I'll post real instructions later

  13. ISO corruption , very annoying.

A quick look at Speccy ... the update section shows Windows 10 updates ??????
    When was that reported generated?

WU won't offer Win10 updates to Windows 7.

You went back to Windows 7 - right?
It might be better to run Speccy again to make sure.

Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

    Thanks
Your BIOS is 213, but the date doesn't match Asus support - not sure that matters as much as the version though.
To eliminate all hardware driver issues - use the Asus Live update utility (if you already have the version on your machine, no need to download it). It's a zip file, so you'll have to extract the contents, install the utility, and run it.

    Description: ASUS Live Update Utility
    Version: V3.0.3
    File Size: 3.69 MBytes
    Update: 2011/07/26
    Download from: Global
Asus reference: U56E | Notebooks | ASUS Global

Aside from that, there were some issues with battery in the Preview. I noticed yours is 86% and the AC is not connected.
The solution in those cases were to power off the machine, remove the battery, connect the AC power and restart the machine on AC power without the battery. I don't know if 86% is a threshold that might trigger this anomaly, or if the issue exists in the Retail version, but it's an easy test and worth a shot.

The only real drawback is that to test these things requires you to attempt the upgrade - that takes time to do and time to recover if it fails.

Here's what I suggest to minimize the time
    • Make sure the drivers are up-to-date
      • run the Asus Live update utility
if a driver is offered - install it
        restart your machine
      • turn on Device installation settings in Windows
Control Panel > Devices and printers - right click the computer icon and select Device installation settings
        - pick Yes, do this automatically

Then manually run Windows Update and look in the Optional section (device drivers are in this section)
select any drivers that are offered, install them and
        restart the machine
    • Launch Disk Management
pick the 2 MB of unallocated space
create a simple volume and format in the process (NTFS is fine - this exercise is only to eliminate the unallocated space)

    • Power off the machine, remove teh battery
      Connect the AC power
      Power up the machine

If you have any questions, ask away.

When all of the above is completed, try running setup on the install media when booted to Windows 7.

Seems like we are out of sync, I have Windows 10 downloaded now because I finally got a good ISO to download . Problem is it will not activate even though I had Win 10 installed successfully through Windows update notification .

I even checked in command prompt to see if it was permanently activated and it was but now it won't activate , annoying as hell.

    Here is a new Speccy:

  15. Thanks, I did lose track of where you were, that's why I asked up top
You went back to Windows 7 - right?

It might take a few days for it to activate.

With all of the gyrations this process put you through, the servers might be confused too *Wink

If it doesn't activate by Monday evening (four days from now) - then there is an issue. The free offer is for a year, so even if you have to roll back to Win7 and got through the upgrade process again (not the best choice, I know) there is plenty of time.
