Windows 10: Issue with Automatic Brightness Adjustment

My Surface Pro 7 recently had a pretty major Windows 10 update or so I assume, considering it took a full half hour and it reset some of my desktop appearance settings unlike previous updates. After this update, however, I've been having some issue with the automatic brightness adjustment, in that it'll adjust constantly.


I've unchecked the "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" box in the display settings but the brightness continues to change every couple of minutes, even when I'm sitting in an area with consistent lighting. This is especially irritating because it keeps adjusting the brightness to the 'ideal' level, going brighter or darker at its own will, forcing me to repeatedly manually adjust the brightness only for it to change a few minutes later anyway. I had the same problem when I first got the laptop but managed to fix it by sifting through some solutions from Google, though now I can't seem to find the article that helped me before.


I requested assistance for this issue through the Microsoft live-chat but none of the suggested solutions including uninstalling the Display adaptor and Sensor drivers, undergoing the Surface and Sensor Diagnostics, changing the adaptive display from battery settings and the Intel Graphics Command Center worked. Please help??

Automatic brightness adjustment

I am running Windows 10 and I cannot disable automatic adjustment of brightness. The brightness keeps dimming after every few minutes inspite of going through all the settings suggested on the forums. How do I disable automatic brightness adjustment? Any
help will be much appreciated!!

• What is the make and model of your device?
• Were you able to see any error message/ error code with this issue?
• Have you tried to install all the pending updates for drivers and Windows Updates on your device?

This issue might have happened due to corrupted/ outdated drivers.

I suggest you to refer to the below Microsoft article, try the troubleshooting steps suggested to change the brightness and check if it helps.

• Type Settings in the Search bar and then Enter.
• Click on the System and then Notifications and Actions which is available on the Left pane.
• Click on Add or Remove quick Actions.
• In the make sure that the Brightness is ON.
• Then click on the Action Center and adjust the Brightness according to your preference.
