Windows 10: Issues caused by deleting Windows.old folder too soon:

Hi. The issues which I'm about to mention I'm sure many of you are already aware of some of which were mentioned on this forum in the past. I thought they are worth bringing them to light again. Twelve days after updating to version 1903 I decided to delete the Windows.old folder using the Windows Disk Cleanup tool. After the tool completed I saw that the Windows.old folder was still there but only contained a few files. I tried to delete the folder but got a message saying it can't be deleted because some files are being used by some other process or something to that affect. I rebooted and then was able to delete the folder. The first issue I noticed is that my SR points were all deleted. The next day when checking the Event Viewer I saw a lot of ESENT 455 errors pointing to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log. I went to that location and noticed that there was no TileDataLayer folder. That's when it occured to me that was the folder with its containing files which stopped me from deleting the Windows.old folder completely before I rebooted. I found the fix for the ESENT error problem elsewhere on this forum which is to create the TileDataLayer folder in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\ and then within that folder create another folder called Database. Within maybe ten minutes the files needed within the Database folder were created and no more ESENT errors. In the future I'll probably wait until the Windows.old folder self deletes. I hope this info will be helpful to others that may experience this problem.

Trouble deleting a folder

Thanks for the suggestion but it says "delete folder failed for E:\....." for each folder I try.

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.

 

Windows 8 - delete windows folders in another drive

I have the problem (from Windows 8) to delete the folders windows and programs on a secondary disk on which it was 7 .... know how to get full control to delete those folders?
