Windows 10: Issues with May 2020 2004 Windows Update and Unable to Uninstall Update

I have recently updated my Asus TUF Gaming FX504series notebook to the latest version of the windows 10 using the windows 10 update assistant. It took nearly 5-6 hours to install. After installation I kept getting numerous black screen of death, but that wasn't the worst part. The worst part is that my PC has become completely slow. Even the shutdown is so slow and restart option takes eternity. To load the login screen when turning the PC on it takes so much time and welcome screen is also very glitched. Now that's not all, after coming to the screen icons take their own time to load, and till that if you click anything or too much for that matter the PC will stop responding. This is the first time that even Task Manager stops responding.

Now coming to video games, the gameslike Rainbow 6 siege, apex legends, etc used to run at 100+fps. After the update it runs like a console, huge fps drop to 40-50 and sometimes even 30-40. Installation of apps take a huge amount of time in general. Apps tend to crash a lot and CPU usage during the startup shows 100%. with background apps disabled. I didn't experience this before with apps enabled in background. Only thing which is enabled is asus battery health and performance app. My CPU is Intel i5- 8300H.


Now when I used the control panel to uninstall update it instead showed something like unpacking .NET 4.5 and when I restarted manually because restart option is buggy the update was gone from the update log. I was happy until I realized that the update remained the same it didn't change anything and the update assistant still say you are up to date.


Please help!! ;. Its a costly notebook for me, I don't want it to get ruined

Yes. I'm in the UK, two out of my six machines were offered it immediately it was released.





Not all machines are being offered the 2004 update yet. As with all previous feature updates, there are some known blocking issues for particular hardware/software. Affected machines are blocked from being offered the May 2020 Update until Microsoft have resolved the issues. Check yours against the list in post #1.

When an issue has been resolved, then the block will be lifted and it will be offered to those machines. Manually upgrading using the install media made by the Media Creation Tool bypasses the checks for blocking issues, you do so at your own risk. Safest to wait until it is offered.

 

How to get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update version 2004

I presume the total absence of any tiles is your personal choice, as is removing the Search, Cortana and TaskView icons from the task bar. Seems you are a minimalist. Not my style, but I'll respect your choice.

You link definitely shows the Start, there's no doubt because on the left it includes the power button, a user icon, etc. but it doesn't show the All apps list as your 1909 screenshot does. This lack of an All apps list in your 2004 could be explained by turning off 'Show apps list in Start menu' in Personalization > Start. But that is not the case in your link, if it were there would be three icons at the top left of Start (the 3rd will show the All apps list). But yours has just the one icon, meaning that the All apps list should be displayed already. Here I show how that looks in 2004, first without the All apps list, them with.







What appear to be happening is that Search that is appearing on the Start menu on top of the All apps list. Now there is no setting provided by MS to make Search appear on Start, but there is in third-part apps such as Classic Shell or Open Shell. Do you have one of those installed?

Whatever the problem is, it is definitely this Search box (minimalist again, everything turned off except Top apps) you are seeing as a part of Start. How it got put there seems unique to your system, but it's not any setting MS offers (or would have changed in the 2004 upgrade) that has done this.
