I've been up all night so this may be a stupid question. How would closing your Yahoo Account now be of any help if this happened in 2013 and 2014?

Closing an account is supposed to reject any spam or other mail to be delivered to it. Also should reject any attempts to use the account in any and nefarious ways. Otherwise, "What gets on internet, stays on internet", can do next to nothing about it.

Sorry CountMike....your last two posts just do not make sense.....perhaps you could answer with more clarity my previous question post #59.
As for your reply to Winuser, it is not answering the point made.

What's so unclear ? Somebody had all my credentials and my password to be able to send mail and and make login to sites in my name with my ymail account. I'm sure I didn't.
I received hotmail and gmail notifications when somebody tried that and were blocked and withheld until I confirm or reject and was advised to change password. No harm was done because there was no any real data about real me in that account.

If you need it typed out,the main point is:

Yahoo kept quiet about so many of their customers accounts being stolen/breached for three or four years, they also are allowing the US government to spy on everyone that has a Yahoo account, where all others at least make an attempt to fight back in court against giving the government a back door.
They have/should have lost the trust of the user, by keeping silent about this.

Simple remedy.....first time you receive mail from suspicious unaccountable website.....change password.

All new site logins require verification by e-mail so you would have been notified as well as the thief, if anyone had stolen your details.

I can only quote from my own experience using Yahoo.....have not had any of your problems.

Borrowing from a old saying, the point I was trying to make is that the barn door was left open and the horses got out in 2013 and 2014. Closing the barn doors now isn't going to put the horses back in the barn. I do agree that Yahoo should have done the right thing and notified their users when they first found out. Changing a password or closing a account now isn't going to undo any damage that may have already been done.

I suspect I have had other accounts hacked and just haven't know about it.

The only account I ever had hacked was my Microsoft account (I know of). They ended up purchasing nearly $10,000.00 worth of equipment from the Microsoft Store.. Caught it immediately and all was reversed (not very easily). Changed passwords. In hopes nothing else happens. This was only about 7 months ago.

Agreed, it is almost useless. Plus, I think yahoo said, there has been no known malicious use of the information reported.

I had my AT&T account info stolen last year. I think they got my info when I purchased my Lumia 640XL. First they went to a Apple Store in New York City and bought a iPhone and a iPad. Then they used my account to buy a couple of Android Tablets somewhere around the area were I live. We didn't know anything until about a month or so later. We found out when my wife tried to call me with her cellphone and the sim card was deactivated. What surprised me the most was that AT&T didn't notice that the activity on my account was out of the ordinary and contact me first. They did take the charges off my bill.

Governments around the world have been spying on the internet since the concept came into being.
They just don't advertise it. You would have to be very naïve to believe otherwise.

Here in the UK its a well known fact GCHQ have been doing it for years, so much so that after some complaints by the general public, from today January 1st 2017 a snoopers law takes effect, having been passed in parliament, allowing them freedom to spy on whatever they wish.

The real reason this spying is needed is to safeguard its citizens....there are some very unsavoury people in this world who wish to cause real harm to innocent people and would go to any length to fulfil their objectives.

Personally I could not care less from a privacy point of view as I have nothing to hide, besides better safe than sorry mourning the dead and crippled.

Thank goodness GCHQ and our security services have been efficient at monitoring, as they have already foiled numerous planned murderous attacks in the UK.

    Agreed.

Spam could be caused by other people's email accounts being accessed/hacked.

Some sort of "bot" read my Yahoo contact list back in 2008 or 2009.
It sent out 1 spam email to all of the addresses in the list.
When it happened a second time (some months later) I deleted the contact list and it never happened again.

If the list had been transferred to a person, I would've expected the spam to continue unabated.

The same thing happened to my other account in 2012 or 2013.
I immediately deleted the address list in that account and it hasn't happened since.

On both occasions, scans by multiple different AM/AV programs indicated that there was no malware on my PC.

Over the years, I have also received spam that:
    • Indicated it was sent by me to me
    • Did not have my email address in it anywhere

"Protecting Citizens" is a claim/justification that politicians spout.
Since there is no proper independent oversight/verification of claims made by intelligence agencies/politicians, we can't know what is actually going on.

Here in Australia, the (Conservative) Attorney General is busy reversing the "onus of proof" (for ordinary citizens, not businesses or politicians) on as many laws as possible, basically claiming that criminals/terrorist are too smart for the authorities.

Based on that justification, I wonder how the police were able to solve any crimes before the arrival of the Internet.

He just introduced a law, designed to silence critics and journalists, that requires the accused to prove that government information stored on their computers was not placed there by the owner.
Even "better", because any time this law is used the Government will claim that it is related to "National Security", so the accused won't even be allowed to see the evidence against them and therefore they won't be able to dispute/refute it.

If you believe "better safe than sorry" justifies any and all dubious behaviour by the authorities, you should be lobbying for the introduction of permanent 24/7 martial law.

What could be safer than never being able to leave home without a military escort?

Exactly. I'm just laughing at all those trying to shut down their Yahoo accounts like headless chicken....
Do these people even know where their security settings are, that Yahoo too has 2-step verification, and how they can set up individual passwords for less secure apps that don't allow 2-step verification?
