I've just bought and set up a brand new laptop using all of my details, passwords etc. Yet when I signed into Microsoft using my password all of my son's details came up instead of mine. I have tried to edit the details but it just reverts back to my son. Now his name is on the password screen of my new laptop! What is going on? Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?

Signing in my account on new laptop

I recently bought a new laptop, the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series. The sellers opened the laptop to set up some of the software. When I got back a local account was already made. When I try signing in to my account, the first two steps go well.

However, in the last step when they ask me to input my password again, it shows incorrect password even when the password is correct. I even tried changing the password of the microsoft account and still it didn't work.

• Is this the only account on the computer?
• Was this account upgraded from previous version of Windows?

It looks like you are using a local account. I suggest you follow these steps:

• Click on search in taskbar and type account.
• Click on Accounts.
• Now, under Your account, click on Sign in with Microsoft account instead.
• Enter your Local account password for confirmation and then follow the screen instruction.
• Enter User name credentials for your the new Microsoft account and click OK.

Set up new laptop without Microsoft Account

Correct, you would pick up at step 17 in the tutorial below to set up the new laptop if not already, and do step 24 to set up a local account. It will be an administrator account by default when created during setup.

Clean Install Windows 10

You can then use option 1 in the tutorial below to set up netplwiz to automatically sign in to your account at startup.

In addition, you may also want to turn off require sign-in on wakeup.
