Windows 10: Jnlp file cannot be opened from edge browser

Hi,


Recently I have observed one weird issue with JNLP file that it cannot be opened with edge browser whereas other browser can able to open it in the same system. however when I download the jnlp file from browser and run it opens fine.


Complete scenario is I have deployed more than 10 VM in MS azure, and in few PC JNLP can be opened but in few cannot.

I have checked all the default file opening settings, and other troubleshooting steps but nothing helped. even tried to install the java version and matched the java version from where it could open is also same.


Any idea to resolve this is appreciated.

edge browser won't open

Please provide more information before we proceed

• Do you facing this issue only with few sites or with all websites?
• Are you getting any error message when try to open?
• Are you able to use other browsers on your system?
• Is the Microsoft Edge Windows opens?

Step 1:

If Microsoft Edge browser opens, I would suggest you try clearing cache and cookies.

Follow the steps below:

• 
  Click on the More actions (…) icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.
  
• 
  Select Settings and click on
  Choose what to clear.
  
• 
  Check the boxes Browsing history,
  Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and
  files and click on Clear.
  

Step 2: If the browser didn’t opens try running
System File Checker.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

To perform SFC Scan, refer to the below link:

Note: Steps mentioned for Windows 8/8.1, will work fine with Windows 10.

What is the exact error message while you try to open the file?

I suggest you to refer to the link to install the latest version of Java:

Java | Oracle

Let us know the status, we are glad to assist you further.

But, beforehand, If you have installed Java Web Start, then you need to set it as the Default for JNLP files.

Try: "Start Button" > "Settings" > "System" > "Default Apps" (Scroll to the bottom of the right-hand pane) > "Choose default applications by file type" and scroll down to JNLP and set the app by clicking on the icon to reveal the options.

Or, in order to bypass this, In the Java Control Panel, click on the Java tab.

- click the security tab

- add http://honte.org to the exception list

- hit apply & try run the jnlp file again
