    July 2020 Windows Update Problems


    My computer Dell XPS 8700 is set to install Windows updates overnight. Lately, almost every Windows update seems to cause issues but the July 2020 update is the worst. It appears that the update did not complete itself so many programs error message - application was unable to start correctly - 0x000007b and Windows functions e.g., Start button, cannot launch Explorer do not work.


    While I can hit the Windows key + I and get to Settings clicking the Start button does not work, if I hit the Update & Security icon, the Settings screen disappears. When I experienced Windows update problems in the past, I could always do a system restore and fix things. Unfortunately, when I tried to do that this time, I found that there were no restore points that pre-dated update. I understand that these are deleted automatically even though there was plenty of disk space available.


    As far as I can tell, I have tried just about every solution that I could find, including the following:


    Unistalled antivirus program


    Unable to access Command Prompt Administrator. Created shortcut but unable to give it admin rights so I can not run scannow or chkdsk or any other command


    Downloaded and attempted to install most recent 1909 Windows update and servicing stack. Received response that both updates are already installed.


    Ran Media Creation Tool


    Tried to reinstall Windows 10 system error 0x8007001F - 0x20006, installation failed in the SAFE-OS phase with an error during REPLICATE_OC operation

    Cannot get into Safe Mode received Critical Process Died error message


    Before I try a Fresh Start and have to reinstall many apps assuming that even works, are there any options available?

    • Windows 10 updates are cumulative. The monthly security release includes all security fixes for vulnerabilities that affect Windows 10, in addition to non-security updates. The updates are available via the Microsoft
      Update Catalog      .
    • For information on lifecycle and support dates for Windows 10 operating systems, please see Windows Lifecycle Facts Sheet.
    • A list of the latest servicing stack updates for each operating system can be found in ADV990001. This list will be updated whenever

    Windows 10 update July 2017

    Hello Meg,

    it will tell you it was they last update on the computer. It should be the first recover option on the list, I only had one option to select.

    Although my backup date was July 17, 2017.

    Yours may be similar?
