June 2018 cumulative update for Windows 10: All you need to know

Microsoft today released new cumulative updates for all supported versions of Windows 10 operating system. Windows 10 is getting both security and non-security improvements, as part of the company’s June 2018 Patch Tuesday rollout. It’s worth noting that only April 2018 Update, Fall Creators Update and Creators Update devices are supported.

In other words, if your device is still running the old Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the patch will be offered to you only if the device is enrolled in the LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel). You’d need to switch to a newer Windows 10 version, like the April 2018 Update or Fall Creators Update.

You can press Win key + R and then type winver to check the version number of your Windows 10 device.

The Windows 10 versions and their build number:

    • Build 17134 represents Windows 10 April 2018 Update.
    • Build 16299 represents Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.
    • Build 15063 represents Windows 10 Creators Update.
    • Build 14393 represents Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

June 2018 cumulative updates are the following:

If your computer is running the old Windows 10 Creators Update, you can download and install Windows 10 April 2018 Update to get new features. June 2018 update only includes the bug fixes.

We’re going to detail each update in this article and you can learn more about the specific updates in our articles linked above.

What’s new in Build 17134.112 for Windows 10 April 2018 Update

The June 2018 patch for Windows 10 April 2018 Update bumps the OS build to 17134.112. The cumulative update brings both security and non-security improvements to Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

Microsoft is fixing both non-security and security bugs in Edge and Internet Explorer. The Graphics component, the Windows Kernel and the Scripting engine are also receiving updates with the fix for the reported vulnerabilities.

Microsoft finally fixed a critical issue causing a black screen on some systems after upgrading to the newest version of the Windows 10.

“Addresses an issue that caused the system to start up to a black screen. This issue occurs because previous updates to the Spring Creators Update were incompatible with specific versions of PC tune-up utilities after installation,” the company explains.

The patch for Windows 10 April 2018 Update offers a smooth installation experience, and there are no reports of failed installs the OS.

It remains to be seen if anyone is going to experience bugs after installing the update. We’ll keep an eye on forums and update the article if necessary.

What’s new in Build 16299.492 for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

    • Provides protections from an additional subclass of speculative execution side channel vulnerability known as Speculative Store Bypass (CVE-2018-3639). These protections aren’t enabled by default. For Windows client (IT pro) guidance, follow the instructions in KB4073119. For Windows Server guidance, follow the instructions in KB4072698. Use this guidance document to enable mitigations for Speculative Store Bypass (CVE-2018-3639) in addition to the mitigations that have already been released for Spectre Variant 2 (CVE-2017-5715) and Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754).
    • Includes additional performance improvements.
    • Addresses an issue in Microsoft Edge that causes incorrect responses to XML requests.
    • Adds support for the SameSite cookie web standard to Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer.
    • Addresses an issue with Internet Explorer that prevents it from using an updated version of location services.
    • Addresses an issue where firmware updates cause devices to go into BitLocker recovery mode when BitLocker is enabled, but Secure Boot is disabled or not present. This update prevents firmware installation on devices in this state. Administrators can install firmware updates by:
    • Temporarily suspending BitLocker.
    • Immediately installing firmware updates before the next OS startup.
    • Immediately restarting the device so that BitLocker doesn’t remain in the suspended state.
    • Security updates to Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft scripting engine, Windows Desktop Bridge, Windows apps, Windows shell, Windows storage and filesystems, Windows app platform and frameworks, Windows virtualization and kernel, Windows wireless networking, and Windows Server.
