As most of you know I have had some issues with Windows 10 and I believe that I was the cause of all of them. I removed stuff that I did not need, tweaked things, and so forth. I now have a clean running machine that is faster than it ever was. I have done the Following:

    1. Removed any and all registry cleaners with the exception of CCleaner.
    2. At first I thought my issue of not being able to rename a file was due to upgrading from Windows 7. It was not.
    3. I am finished with changing anything from this day forward.
    4. MS seems to know more about their system than I do so why try to tweak it.

I now set a restore point before I install anything. I make an image every other day. I am going to clone my system when SR1 comes out, if it does.

Just thought I would share this. Be careful as most of your problems with Windows is between the chair and the Keyboard.*Smile

    :)

    Yeah! I think so.

    It is to be done.

    And very irritating.

    Some good points!

As they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Different for me though: "If it ain't broke, break it, so I got sumpthin to do"! *Wink

I hear you but at the time I did not have a workable image. Thank God I found one in a drawer on a hard drive.

  6. You are now officially a Native Windows evangelist.

There are a few good 3rd party utility applications (Piriform, Minitool, etc) and there are many bad utility applications.

When I started playing with Win10 during the Preview, I decided to 'forget' everything I knew and learn Win10. Well, I dind't forget all I knew, but there are a lot of things I have learned that were in Win7 and Win8 that I never knew about.

So congratulations, and spread the word - Windows manages Windows well enough ... you don't need to tweak it or supplement the native utilities. And DEFINITELY stay clear of 3rd party boosters, tweakers, registry cleaners, and driver finders.

    Use the source Luke!
OEMS provide the best source for drivers ... after Windows Update. The only time you should consider looking for a driver is if the current driver is causing problems. Newer, bigger, better faster ... isn't always and often cause BSODs - backing off the driver is usually the 'cure'

An image every other day is a bit much, but that's your call. I image my system every quarter, I can always bring it back up-to-date with WU. Personal data is more important to back up.

People are referencing SR1 - Win10 is a bit different - the cumulative updates apply only the updates that have not been applied. So every cumulative update is a SR if you want to give it a name. By my count there are 4 or 6 (two were reinstalled a few days after being successfully installed on my machine ???) cumulative updates since 29 July ... so is it SR1 or SR5?? Things will get confusing if people start making up terms (not you, the media and the techies).

Anyway, a long diatribe - but the main gist is congratulations *Dinesh

Hey Gary, one more piece of advice if I may, don't "clean" your system or browsers to often, and then really only when you need to. Cleaning regularly or every day can actually slow things down, in that saved temp files are there so Windows doesn't have to recreate them every time. Such as thumbnails MRU's jumplists MMC for the system, and the browser temp, cache have data to speed up creating often gone to pages, history wile be redownloaded the next time you open the browser if you don't clean your search engine(for example in Chrome settings>history tab. All this recreating will slow down the PC and use more resources as it all will need to be downloaded, written, indexed. I only clean out unsaved cookies, JAVA if I used it, Flash Player & Silverlight, another words browser add-ons only. I also clean RegEdit and WordPad to set them back to a fresh starting point, and then, only just before doing a system image

Thanks Cliff I don't. I like to have a history in case I need to return to a site that I do not have bookmarked.
@Slartybart I have 4 unused 1TD Hard Drives so I have plenty of space. I usually do an image when I am eating supper and it is finished when I am. MR is pretty fast.

God only knows how often I saw someone that had a question or a problem, and I think, Hey I saw that the other day, then go to my search engines history and give an approximate date and BINGO! That's where Bing really rocks.

Maybe I will switch to Bing..

  11. I just learned a hard lesson myself. Upgraded 7 to 10. Everything was working smooth. Watched a YouTube video on "How to speed up Windows 10, and make it perform better.". HaHa! I'm not a dummy. I know a good amount of how to "tweak" the system, and some things I knew, but some I didn't. I tried some I didn't. Bad! Messed up my drivers, and only a system restore fixed it. Now I'm back to the way it was minus three hours of my life. It works great, and I'm not touchin' nuttin' again!

One of the biggest issues I have seen people have with Windows since Vista is treating Windows like XP.
Windows hasn't been like XP since Vista, and never will be.

Advice to any who read this: Stop Treating Windows Like Windows XP, they are completely different.
Also stay away from registry cleaners, even CCleaner's Registry Cleaner can cause issues if you are not careful.
CCleaner for cleaning up files is fine, usually.

Glad you got your issues sorted. Windows 10 is an excellent OS.
