    Kb3150513

I started the download of the Cumulative Update (KB4015438) that came out a few days ago. I also noticed a mystery update (KB3150513) included with it. Windows Update tried to install this first but it got hung up in the "Preparing to install" phase. It sat at 0% for a good 15 minutes, finally moved to 50%. It hung there for another good 15 minutes and finally ended up saying that it could not install the update indicating error 0x800705b4 (although I think that error may have applied to KB4015438). I rebooted the computer and it had a short "Do not shutdown your computer" message before it finally finished the reboot. I then did a "Check for updates" again and this time it began processing KB4015438. It took a little while to download and install that (I understand it was a rather large update), but it finally finished.

In looking up information on KB3150513, it appears to be something Microsoft sends out prior to the major updates such as the Anniversary Update. I has the title of the "Latest Compatibility Definition Update". It seems to be used to determine if your computer is compatible with the next major Windows 10 update (in this case the Creators Update). It seems that when MS sends out some of these updates, they may have a problem simultaneous installing them. I understand the Creators Update will make some changes to Windows Update, hopefully for the better.

  2. KB3176493 and KB3172729 Windows 10 security updates messing with Laptop

    Hi evvdveld,

please have a look into your windows update history:

Did this happen, although KB3150513 (date: Sept, 1) is installed?

Or is KB3150513 just not installed on your system?

The answer you give might indicate, whether KB3150513 is a substantial game changer with respect to the this thread's topic. Or whether KB3150513 is in no way a fix to the problems, 3176493 and/or 3172729 made us run into.

Microsoft Update KB3150513 installed 5 times in the last 2 months

    Thanks for your response.

    I have Win10 Version 1607.

For that version there only appears to be one update sent out according to the catalogue.

    I put a search in for KB3150513 windows 10.

Whereas this is what I see in my Update History :

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2017-05 Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3150513)

    Successfully installed on 15/05/2017

Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3150513)

    Successfully installed on 16/03/2017

Hence my question : 5 successful installs for the same update!

That is nothing more than a advert that RS2 is on the way. It will show up in Windows Update and if you click on the link it will take you to a site where you can sign up to get it early. It is nothing to worry about there are ways to remove it.

I don't think that is the case. I have another system that does not have that update, but it does have the Creators Update message.
The only issue I have is the mess it made of the update, basically tripling the normal update time and forcing some manual intervention. You would think by now MS would have this under control. There were only two updates that were available, not a whole bunch.

  6. I was referring to KB3150513. I have read that that other update is causing many users headaches You can download it from The MS Catalog site and manually install it. That is what I did.

KB3150513 is not installed on one computer but I have the Creators Update message appearing on it. I have not yet attempted installing KB4015438 on this computer. When I used the Windows Update MiniTool to check what updates were pending, it shows both KB4015438 and KB3150513 pending so I might have the same problem on that computer. I might try the MS Catalog method or use this MiniTool.

    Kb3150513

I ran the standard Windows Update on my desktop, applying the two updates. All went very smooth and took slightly over 15 minutes. I made sure that I disabled my AV and Malwarebytes beforehand. I remember that when I applied the updates on my laptop, CCleaner popped up at the beginning and my AV was still active. I disabled them but possibly that caused an issue.
