    Hi everyone,we have a number of servers not clients which suddenly want to install KB3172729. This is an update from 2016 so we have no idea why it is suddenly needed now, 6 years later. has there been no other update so far which superseded the KB3172729 ?Does anyone have a clue why it suddenly popped up?Kind regards,Maria

    Suddenly got a recommendation from Windows Update to install KB3172729 (released in 2016!) on Windows 8.1

    Suddenly today I got a recommendation from Windows Update to install KB3172729 (released on 2016-08-09, which is more than six years ago!) on Windows 8.1 x64.

    ~~~~~
    Security Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3172729)
    Download size: 96 KB
    You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Important
    ~~~~~

    I keep my OS pretty up-to-date: sometimes maybe a few weeks behind, but no more than that.

    In the last day or two I (successfully) installed three updates (recently released):

    • 2022-09 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5017367) Installation date: ‎2022-‎09-‎28 15:34 Installation status: Succeeded ... More information: September 13, 2022—KB5017367 (Monthly Rollup)
    • 2022-09 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5017398) Installation date: ‎2022-‎09-‎29 00:30 Installation status: Succeeded Update type: Important ... More information: https://support.microsoft.com/help/5017398
    Immediately after that I got the 'green bar', telling me that my OS was completely up to date. (At most there might have been one optional update available.)

    Then a few hours later it was claimed that I suddenly needed a 96-kilobyte update from many years ago.

    I had a quick search online. It seems that there are a handful of related reports:

    This Microsoft website indicates that KB3172729 has been superseded by KB5012170.

    On the cited EightForums thread, a user said that KB3172729 was replaced by "the Jan. 2021 KB4535680 security update" for Win8.1 x64 (which I run) — but not for x32.

    Questions:

    • Why is this update suddenly being recommended?
    • Should I install it, or ignore it, or is there something I should check first, in order to decide?
    Note: I am currently in the middle of a separate query (When to stop running DISM), which I mention just in case it's pertinent.

    Thanks in advance for your tips and advice.

    Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

    Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

    Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond KB3172729 suddenly appeared as necessary to be installed on servers :) Best regards.

    And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

    Scanned files appear on server

    Hi,

    I realize that scanned files do not appear on the client computer instantly even though they appear on the server. I will try to help you with this issue.

    Please answer the question to get more clarity on this issue:

    • Is the server PC and this computer on a Domain Network?

    If the computer is part of a Domain Network, then suggest you to post this question in the TechNet Forum

    Technet forums

    Thank you.
