  2. That worked in so far as I downloaded the update with chrome. However it has still failed to install.

  3. I don't see it looking back to 12/3/17 which is as far back as my update history goes.

KB4015438 and KB4013429 fail to install

You won't, not unless you downloaded it yourself. As I said in Post #9

  5. and you posted (OP posted) "my windows version is 14393.693" which is the January cumulative update. There have been five cumulative updates since.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...update-history

Looking for @Bree input on this next idea.

Windows is not accepting the KB4013429 or KB4015438. Reason unknown.

What if you just said fine, and download KB4016635 the March 22, 2017 Cumulative update. This would bring you to latest build and as they are cumulative you don't need the other two.

    Comments?

Only two that should have been delivered in the normal way by windows update. Build .729 was for Windows Server 2016, builds .726 and .970 are catalog-only downloads. Your point is still valid though, windows update should have been working.

I suspect it may fail the same way as the one downloaded and tried in post #15 did. Something abut this system seems to be preventing the update installing correctly. I would check the system first, with sfc /scannow then retry the recently downloaded standalone package, this can often work where windows update fails. To minimise possible reasons for failure I'd disconnect from the internet and remove all unnecessary USB devices before trying the update again.
Run SFC Command in Windows 10
(and read the notes below option 3, step 4 if sfc fails the first time round)

  7. I have three systems. Only one is stuck on this Kb4015438 download. Tried everything on this thread and nothing.

Hi bkhaverkamp. Welcome to the TenForums @bkhaverkamp.

If you manually download from update catalog it gets stuck?? If so it maybe beneficial to start new thread as you should be able to download, its just a file until you execute it.

  9. Hi,
Right click ie11 and select Run as administrator will usually fix the blue screen don't ask me why it happens on win-7 too.
The active x add-on won't install unless ie11 is elevated.

  12. Hi woldsweather

Things are getting mixed up. Another member joined thread and said he couldn't download.

Bree had suggested you run sfc /scannow from a command prompt(admin).

    Could you run that please.

    Edit 1:

If sfc /scannow fails please rerun.

KB4015438 and KB4013429 fail to install

    1. Create a folder in C: called Scratch. (The folder will serve as memory using your hard drive.)
    2. Create another folder called Update in C:
    3. Download the KB from the Windows Update Catalog to the Update Folder. Hint: Navigate to the C:\Update\ folder and rename that very long name to KB4015438.msu by backing out all of the GUI. It will save the fingers and typos later on.
    4. In the lower left corner, left click the Flying Window logo and select the Settings Icon (looks like a snow flake to me.) When the Settings window comes up, click on Update and Security > Recovery and select Restart Now under the Advanced Startup heading. The computer will reboot into the Advanced Startup Menu. Navigate to the option that allows you to run a Command Prompt. (Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt). The computer will reboot once again and you should see the familiar Command Prompt Window.

When the X: Command prompt appears, type the following:

    Dism.exe /Image:C:\ /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\Update\KB4015438.msu /ScratchDir:C:\Scratch

(Don't mess up! Space is Important because the space is a delimiter for each Dism.exe command switch. Also proper use of forward and back slash is important.)

  14. I finally got my system happy by subscribing to the insider preview build. It added two additional updates and then successfully updated. Over the last week it had previously failed dozens of times.

Well...I'm going through this now on an old Toshiba P305 laptop. I'm at .639 and can't get anywhere with WU. Fails every time. Then I downloaded KB4015438 tried running it and it too failed. Right now I'm trying FMPECK's suggestion (Post #26). I'll edit this post with the results as of right now it's at 20% done.

    Edit:

The operation completed with success and at boot of Windows I got a "Working on Update..." and then boot to desktop. At the check of Winver I am now showing Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.970)! So SUCCESS! BUT WU is still showing I have the update waiting to be installed....what do I do with that?

BTW when you issue the command in DOS it will message you it completed but make sure you wait until the command prompt returns before you exit.

Thank you FMPecK, you saved the bacon!
