KB4015438 and KB4013429 fail to install

My apologies to replying to an old thread but it is relevant to my question.

I have a work friend who can not get KB4013429 to install, for all the same reasons posted above. I've seen and read a number of fixes but my question is; if they install the Creators Update, will it install, regardless of the issues they've had with that previous update?

    Thanks!

'Regardless' is perhaps a bit strong, but yes, it is more likely to install than not. A Features Update like the Creators Update is quite different from a cumulative update. The Creators Update is installing a new operating system to replace the old one, not patching individual files in-place as a cumulative update does.

Given we don't know what may be wrong on your friend's machine, making a system image before starting would be a wise precaution. The Creators Update may (or may not) fix the windows update problem. It depends on what's causing it, if a registry setting is the cause it could be carried over. Chances are it may fix it, apparently there are a lot of changes to the update process under the bonnet.

  3. I can run again but have run several times throughout this exercise.

KB4015438 and KB4013429 fail to install

Bree, thanks for the response. I'll try the fixes first and use this option if all else fails. Granted I understand that installing the Creator update is not an ultimate fix. But we'll use it, just in case.

If KB4015438 failed to install on my system but KB4015217 was successfully installed and winver shows I'm at Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.1066) am I ok?

Yes. Being a cumulative update it includes all the fixes from the previous ones.

  7. Not sure where we go from here, some updates have recently installed (attached) but KB4015217 KB4013429 and KB4016635 failed. Do I still need these? Will the new big update that's coming solve everything?

  8. KB4015438 and KB4013429 fail to install

    Hi woldsweather.

From the attached link your device is now trying to install the latest cumulative update KB4015217. You will see the other KB's you mentioned are previous versions. As the latest includes all the previous updates you only need the latest and that is what windows will try to install.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/help/4009938

Your issue is that none of them will install. I think you system is at 14393.693 or KB 3213986 dated January 10, 2017. Could you please confirm.

You've run the trouble shooter with no success. You've run sfc, again no errors.

I think I would move on and try the repair / in place upgrade outlined in this tutorial. It will likely move you to the Creators release.

I would ensure you have a copy of your data backed up off the machine.

You may wish to wait for alternative recommendations.

  9. Yes 14393.693 version 1607 though I don't see a date with that.

  10. On that link I gave you click on the KB. You will see January 10th.

There was another thread where a member suggested uninstalling all updates after this date. Myself I would move on to the Creator Release / Update.

  11. Is it possible to get the creator update before it automatically downloads it?

Yes. Download a fresh copy of the Media Creation tool and use it to 'make media for another PC'. It can make the .iso or bootable USB media for the Creators Update. To upgrade, mount the .iso (or insert the USB) and run Setup from within Windows. If using the USB, remember to remove it when the time comes for the first reboot.

  14. I hadn't seen this and updated to the creator update without the media creation tool. Now trying to get windows back to 'normal'! AT the moment a tab in IE11 opens edge what!

..later note- got of that asap!
