Windows 10: KB4579311 keeps trying to install and fails everytime

I think I stepped on someone else's post, so I am re-posting this. I originally replied to the post on 10/16/2020, so the date sequence might be a little out of context.

"2020-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems KB4579311Failed to install on ‎10/‎15/‎2020 - 0x800f0988". It hung at 0%, 11%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, 19%, 20%, jumped to 73%, then stated an error message and wanted me to try again. It was late evening 10/15/2020, so I shut down. I booted up this morning and it looks like the same sequence is occurring.

Same problem this morning. It went from 73% to 100% then an error occurred.

KB4579311 failed to install thru Windows update 3, actually 4, times, so I went to the Microsoft Download Center, picked the proper download and tried to install from there. That also failed. I also have not seen the Malicious Software removal tool for October.

10/17/2020: It is trying to install again this morning with the same apparent problem, so I paused it for now.

Password not accepted after KB4579311 update, having tried the following basics six times:-

Double checked correct PW

Entered PW with Virtual screen keyboard

Check Virtual keyboard was UK setting

Changing PW in safe internet mode

PW reset using USB

All my above attempts failed while using KB4579311 update.

Returned system to previous operating system prior to KB4579311 update computer accepts my PW and works all OK. Have paused win 10 updates for one month as it appears KB4579311 update is causing the issue.

Having read previous MRDBeta work around reply post.

KB4579311 is sitting in my Local Disk, Windows, SoftwareDistribution, Download folder. Is it worth me deleting KB4579311 and try to install the patches or through Windows 10
updates again?

OR

Wait for a confirmed work around or update from MS as I need my computer for work and I'm not a computer expert?

KB4025339 Fails Install 0x80070564

I am trying Eagle 51's suggestions now. Windows Update troubleshooter found a bunch of errors and fixed all but one.The update is trying to download KB4025339 again. I'll see what happens. At step one troubleshooter finishes with one error unresolved "Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected-Not Fixed". Windows update stalled at 0%.

At step 2 same troubleshooter error. The KB finished a new download failed to install.
Did step 3 KB has downloaded but fails to install.

If Eagle's suggestion doesn't work I'll try EdTittel's suggestion

Tried bothe Eagle & Ed 's suggestions - do not work. Anyone else?

I have noticed that the latest update for my nvidia drivers has failed to update. Wondering about that!

 

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installation fails

TheMailMan78: Thanks, but I have already tried resetting my BIOS to the default settings, but the install fails everytime. Also, I'm assuming you ment to say 'format the drive before you install', not 'format the driver before you install'.. I did format the drive before trying to install. It didn't make a difference. Thanks for the suggestions though.
