Windows 10: KB4586876 & KB4598242 - Installation failed

Good morning,


Windows Update properly downloads:

• KB4586876 2021-01 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10, version 20H2 for x64;
• KB4598242 2021-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems.

However, during the needed reboot, the installation process cannot be successfully completed; I have tried three times with no success.

Following the indications of the online Microsoft support, I executed the steps:

1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
2. sfc /scannow
3. Run Windows Update.

Again, during the reboot, the process fails.

Here you have the error log of Windows Update generated right after the last reboot: WindowsUpdate.log

KB4025339 Fails Install 0x80070564

I am trying Eagle 51's suggestions now. Windows Update troubleshooter found a bunch of errors and fixed all but one.The update is trying to download KB4025339 again. I'll see what happens. At step one troubleshooter finishes with one error unresolved "Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected-Not Fixed". Windows update stalled at 0%.

At step 2 same troubleshooter error. The KB finished a new download failed to install.
Did step 3 KB has downloaded but fails to install.

If Eagle's suggestion doesn't work I'll try EdTittel's suggestion

Tried bothe Eagle & Ed 's suggestions - do not work. Anyone else?

I have noticed that the latest update for my nvidia drivers has failed to update. Wondering about that!

 

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time

Thank you for your detailed instructions!! This will probably take several days & I'll keep you updated.

I did steps 1 & 2. This installed more updates than I could count...something like 20-30. However, KB4586876 was not listed. Unfortunately, I had to undo several things (I now remember why I didn't update all MS products). I have Word, Excel, & Access from 2003, as well as Word & Access 2016. Updating MS products caused a "file validation" problem whenver I opened a .doc file. I fixed that (with a registry hack). However, it did something to Word 2016, where all my .doc & .docx files were opened by Word 2003 & Word 2016 wasn't an option under "Open with...". I ended up restoring everything from Macrium Reflect.

I will now start with step 3.2.
