Kernel Security Failure BSOD - Rarely used laptop

    Hello Everyone,

I realize there are numerous threads on this issue, but I am posting because this just came about out of the blue on this laptop and it is rarely used. I occasionally use it to write with a word processor and access my personal cloud at home. Not much else. About a week ago, after the login window appeared, I entered my password and I was redirected to my Microsoft account to obtain a new password. There was only one attempt to enter the password and I am certain it was correct, but I got redirected anyway. I changed the password and everything was fine for that session. Tonight, I started the computer and it seemed to boot into the desktop Ok, but no applications would open. I started the web browser |(edge) and it would not allow me to click on any links at all. I decided to restart the computer and encountered the BSOD with the kernel security failure error. After many attempts at a restart, I was finally able to enter my password on a blue screen and it sluggishly went to the desktop. I ran an AVG scan and performed several optimization tasks on AVG and for the moment it is running OK, but I have not attempted a reboot since.

I have read the rules about posting on a BSOD and the file is attached. I would certainly appreciate some help on this one. The laptop is a one year old HP, AMD A10 processor with 8GB memory.

    :)

How to fix Kernel Security Check Failure?

I don't get BSOD. When I boot up normally, I go to the login screen then immediately receive the BSOD (Kernel Security Failure).

    Hello Sprocket,

    Welcome to TenForums *Smile

There was only one of the crash dumps that could be read. Analysing this shows the following from the stack:

Thank you so much for your reply. Would an out of date touch pad driver cause this? If so, can I update this driver from within Windows itself?

    Many thanks again

From the kernel memory dump recorded at the moment of the crash it certainly seems possible. Your best approach is to go via the Laptop manufacturers website and see if they have provided updated touchpad drivers.

Update: I just checked from Device Manager and the driver is up to date. It is time stamped with that date.
Could I just reinstall the driver from Device Manager?

    Thanks

Sorry, my post was not clear (I've now updated it), I was providing the date of your currently installed drivers so I do not know if they are the most up to date available.

I see, thanks. I will check HP's website and see if there is anything there. But last August hardly seems like an old driver. But, I am not the expert. Seems fitting. The warranty on this laptop ran out in February.

    Thanks for your help.

You are welcome! With the rapidly changing W10 operating system OEMs have a real problem keeping their drivers up to date. Some devices are having driver updates every few months!

Well, maybe its back to the drawing board. I have the latest driver, I found one on HP's site but I got the message that the installed driver is newer than the one I downloaded.

    Oh goodness.

For HP computers there are 2 and possible 3 methods to update drivers using HP as the source of the drivers.
    1) HP support assistant
    2) HP softpaq download manager for the business line computers
    3) Manual download directly from the HP website.

Please confirm the model: HP Notebook - 15-ba042na

The current BIOS: BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.17, 01/09/2016 SMBIOS Version 2.8
Most up to date BIOS for the computer's configuration: F.31 Rev.A

Run the HP support assistant to see if there are any other drivers that need updating.

This is the link for the HP support assistant applicable to your computer's configuration:

Kernel Security Failure BSOD - Rarely used laptop

Thank you for your reply. I have already run the HP Support app several times and no new drivers are identified. I did note the BIOS update, but to be honest I am very nervous about updating the BIOS. A number of years ago a killed a laptop trying to update the BIOS and rendered it useless.

Oddly, today I have had no issues and the laptop seems to have returned to normal. I searched for anything I could have downloaded that may have caused this issue and the only thing I could think of was installing CPU-Z. I want to upgrade the memory in this laptop to 16GB and I installed CPU-Z to correctly identify what to buy. I have now uninstalled it just in case that was the culprit. But, as of now, everything is OK. I would have liked to resolve what the issue was to prevent it in the future, but I am happy just to have the working laptop back.

    Many thanks for your help

    Bob

  14. Hi,
If you want to upgrade memory buy a kit not just try to match an existing stick
But if you must to save a little money use this for upgrade and matching options

Thank you, I have done just that using Crucial's Scanner. As it turns out, the brand I have installed in Micron and Crucial has the same matching brand. There is a BIG difference in price between an 8GB stick and 16GB. It appears to be matching,

    Thank you for your help
